One of the bands I was pissed to miss this year at ProgPower (first ProgPower I did not go to) ws Adagio...but today I saw them here in Barcelona and they put on a great show even though there were only about 100 people at the venue. Stephan Forte is truly an animal on guitar, and the est of the band is great as well. The new singer seems to be a very cool and funny guy and was getting the crowd involved all the time. They were the headliners (with David Valdes, a guitar shredder from Spain, Mindflow (Brasilian Prog Metal band) and Sacred (Spanish Heavy metal band) opening the concert). The venue was not great and the sound was so-so, but still they put on quite a show!
This small venue was a big change from last weekends concerts when I saw Nightwish with Sonata Arctica (10.000 people) and Saxon with Chinchilla (close to 2.000 people). NIghtwish is really huge here and they had to move them to a bigger venue since tickets sold out in a matter of days. Here in Europe they include fireworks, flamethrowers and even confetti in their shows. They played a flawless show, had a great sound, and a great visual show. SOnata Arctica was boring...mainly the fault of the singer who truly SUCKS live.
Saxon was also great and had the placing rocking for 2 and a half hours! Joerg Michael on drums is a great addition for them.Chinchilla was pretty good, especially the singer.
Next weekend its Therion with Tristania and Trail of Tears, then Epica with Lullacry and Visions of Atlantis....and in a couple of weeks I will finally get to see Rage again...been waiting for that since their great show at PPIV!

I've heard that from so many people about Sonata Arctica's singer - that I'm starting to believe that it might be a general consesus. He tries doing so much on the albums though, that I feel live it might just come across as weak and unpowerful. Like the song "Don't Say a Word" - I just don't see how this song could be as powerful live as it is on the album -with the chorus.

Hopefully they'll come to PP and we'll be able to decide. :)

I would love to see Therion live. Unfortunately my next concert experience is escorting my wife to Korn. Someone needs to be her bodyguard against the throng of Hot Topic - Food Court - MallCore crowd.

I love America, but the tours here suck.

I think he did have a bad night and I know he can sing better than he did, but I still think he is unable to recreate live what he does in studio. Its not that he is a terrible singer, but in studio he does a lot of really high-pitched singing which he often seems to be unable to recreate live (also seen video and on live album his voice does break a lot when trying to hit the high notes). I just found out Angra is coming to Barcelona soon, as well as Brainstorm, Kreator and Dark Tranquillity. Keep 'em coming!!!!:hotjump:

Well I was very lucky enough to see Adagio at ProgPower USA and they had a great show...I wish they would have played a little longer. My mother is from Barcelona lived there for a while before moving to Malaga, Spain in her teens. I am jealous that you can see all these great bands in Spain! :hotjump: My cousins in Malaga still see some good rock shows but not many play there in the Costa De Sol. :)

The US is slowly starting to bring some great bands but for the most part we don't get to see bands like Sonata Arctica or Saxon as much as we like too (note: I did see Saxon years ago at the Long Beach Arena opening up for Yngwie Malmsteen to 10,000+ people, they stole the show in my opinion as Yngwie was nothing more then just guitars.).

I can't wait to hear the next album with Gus on vocals...it will ROCK! :headbang:

Try living in Cuba, NY- we had Bob Dylan at our local University last week. :yuk:

Sheesh, can I move to Bacelona? :D

Gus worked the crowd here at PP pretty hard, too. I remember thinking during their set "Ease up, Gus, or they'll be exhausted before the night's over." :)

He was also very into it in Barcelona...constantly holding the mic towards us (the ones in front row) so that we would sing the choruses. If he was so pumped up in Barcelona with only a little over 100 people I can already imagine how excited he was at PP with a full house.

I am planning on going to Malaga soon to visit some friends. Most metal bands, when they come to Spain, tour Barcelona, Madrid and one city in the Basque Country (either Vitoria, Bilbao, San Sebastion or Bergara) but unless they do an extensive tour through Spain that's about it, so there are not many concerts close to Malaga. Its definitely a big difference here compared to Costa Rica (where I have lived for the longest) and Indianapolis (where I studied) in terms of the volume of metal concerts...I definitely can't complain.

Saxon are a great live band and have a lot of energy, especially considering their age. They gave a very professional delivery...almost at the level of Iron Maiden, and the incredible part is that they are getting faster and heavier with age...their last album has several power metal songs (Joerg Michael's influence I'm sure).

New Adagio will definitely be great as always. As long as Forte composes music for Adagio I am sure it will be great. :headbang:

Hey man! It's a shame you couldn't make it to prog power this year... Nor did your brazilian friend from SAn Francisco (I didn't see him at least)...At least you got to see Adagio! great live band :)

Hello!

Yeah, I was disappointed I could not go because I would have loved to see Brainstorm, Tad Morose, Dreamscape, Wuthering Heights, Into Eternity and Adagio playing on a big stage. But most important of all, there is nothing like that annual weekend in "Hotlanta" hanging out, eating at that pita place, watching great bands and partying after the shows with all the metalheads. Many people in Barcelona have already been informed of how great ProgPower is :headbang:

Ahhh you bastards are so lucky with these damn tours you get. America is starting to get better tours but only a few traditional/power shows. More death/black/extreme shows than anything but we do have Nightwish and Sonata Arctica coming up.

Not to mention the Kataklysm/Macabre/Napalm Death/Cannibal Corpse tour that just wrapped up - THAT was a hell of a show. I'd seen my share of the other bands prior to this show, so i was there for Macabre all the way, but everyone brought their game face to that show. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

If you fellow death metal fans haven't already, give Macabre a try. A death metal band (well, more like grindy speed metal) since 1984 and still going strong, lineup intact. Not many bands can pull off being both totally obsessed with serial killers AND having the best sense of humor of any death metal band I've ever seen (save possibly Lawnmower Deth)

Last time In Flames was in town, it was the night before the Kataklysm show. The guys from 'Klysm were in town and came to hang out. They bought me WAY too many shots and I ended up missing their show cause I felt like crap! That'll teach them to buy gals drinks! LOL.

I cannot wait for the Into Eternity show in March! That's going to kick so much ass!
