As I recall, James was not standing in the wrong spot, the pyros just blew up all at the same time, it was an electric problem or something out of their control.
So whatever you do, if you plan of using pyros or anything, you must accept to face the consequence...

I think it was automated. Most pyro is for big shows. Remember that collapsing stage Metallica had on the last tour? Kirk almost got his head knocked off once.
Anyone catch the last Rush tour? The pyro that went up behind Neil was insane. I could feel it at a distance, I don't know how he could stand it just ten feet away.
