Katatonia

viva emptiness is a pretty bad album, so no, it's not a good starting point.

VE is imo their best album in the clean vocals era. much improvement in every aspect, esp. the vocals and drums, compared to LFDGD which is the album i like the least.
i think TGCD or VE would be good starting points

I'll say... I'd been meaning to get some Katatonia for ages, so I went and bought Viva Emptiness cause everyone was raving about it. Now I'm not really keen on hearing any more Katatonia. Even the lyrics themselves were sufficiently cringeworthy to put me off, and normally I don't pay much attention to lyrics. :erk:

Start with Lfdgd, then you should get Discouraged ones and The Great cold distance, for some variation idk, Tonight's decision and Viva emptiness are pretty great too. From the older era, get the new remastered Brave murder day with the extra tracks from the sounds of decay ep...melodic doomdeath masterpiece.

I'd go for 'The Great Cold Distance' (Which I believe is their most accomplished record by a long shot), followed by 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' (which is warmer, and rougher, but still has some of their best songwriting).

It's all pretty good stuff, with Brave Murder Day/Discouraged ones being the creative peak that a lot of people agree on.

I'd say they really kicked it up a notch with The Great Cold Distance also in terms of finding a powerful direction to take their sound, writing excellent songs and creating a strong atmosphere.

edit: My favourite band since it stopped being Opeth in 2003!
