Katatonia

that actually made me laugh. I enjoy some Katatonia, but at times they sound uncomfortably close to nu-metal to my ears, especially on Viva Emptiness.

They always struck me as the averaging out of about 20 much better bands. Then again, I haven't listened to anything later than Brave Murder Day...

Personally, I didn't like either of their albums after The Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Viva Emptiness did have horrible lyrics as mentioned above and both albums aren't exactly bordering nu-metal, but they have the verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus thing down like an art form, which gets extremely boring to my ears. I would recommend anything before Viva Emptiness.

viva emptiness is a pretty bad album, so no, it's not a good starting point.

VE got me into Katatonia even after I heard LFDGD and Discouraged Ones, which had to grow on me. I probably would've given up on the band if I hadn't heard VE, which is an easier listen than previous Katatonia material (kind of like what Blackwater Park is for Opeth). Over time I've become a huge fan of Katatonia and wouldn't even put VE in my top 4 releases from the band.

some of the lyrics on VE are just funny

"He went too far the fucker, wasn't like i owed him money, this was different"

Great album though! Especially "Evidence," "Omerta" and "Inside the City of Glass"

Haha yeah the lyrics are funny but I agree with morfeind... it's an easy listening album and it drew me to Katatonia. after that i checked out the earlier stuff and now im hooked. tgcd is an absolute mind blower tbh.

edit: haha "what is it? i have been drinking. i do not understand."

this one. then get them ALL.

You can add this one too :)

VE was a huge letdown imo. Some great ideas, but in the end, poor execution. A lacklustre album from a band who can do so much more (and did with TGCD)

i disagree completely. LFDGD was a huge letdown for me. VE was an amazing improvement in every aspect. TGCD is brilliant too, but not quite that brilliant as VE. the only 3 weaker tracks on VE are 'Sleeper', 'Wealth' and 'One Year From Now'. the other ones are flawless.

also far from ideal recording conditions, and Dan Swano pulled off a pretty decent salvage and conversion of the sound that's probably pretty different from the original tapes or whatever.

they seem to have been firing on all pistons again as of TGCD though so :kickass:

Hmm i disagree about LFGDG being a letdown, that album is a masterpiece, Katatonia's best imo. Btw i adore Viva Emptiness, very varied, great use of different guitar effects, some of Jonas most emotional vocal delivery..i like the lyrics a lot too, for me it is sincere storytelling, the use of swearing doesn't make the lyrics juvenile, maybe some parts of the lyrics are a bit funny but i like them...and well, lets not forget Tonight's Decision, that album owns.

I've listened to TGCD 4 or 5 x's & I like it less every time. It's probably the most disappointing album of the year for me.

BMD, LFDGD & Viva are so much better IMO. Unfortunately I've yet to hear their other albums.
