Soulseek is great for finding hard-to-find files... though its probably slower than others, because its direct P2P, so no multiple user downloads.

Slsk is great, i've found huge amounts of great music. MIRC is also an ok one to use...but not for music.

Soulseek's search options are very limited, but its great for discovering new music. Just find a user with some good stuff and get them to recommend stuff or just download all their files! It's got a good community kinda thing going. Also, Ive found it pretty easy to find whole albums or fairly rare stuff on there.

DC++ is my fave, but have you tried Bit Torrent? Do a search on google for a client and then go to http://www.suprnova.org/ and start downloading

Bit Torrent is a bit too random for me. I used it exclusively for a while but the problem is-sometimes it takes a couple minutes to dl and album and sometimes it takes several hours. Sometimes it won't dl at all. You just can't know for sure. SLSK is ok, but DC++ is by FAR my favorite. You can dl from favorite users just like with SLSK and there are many hubs to search from, so if you can't find it in one, open another! Plus, the UM hub is there so you can download from people that frequent this board. I find most my metal needs on the UM hub and a couple others that were recommended on this board.

soulseek is where its at for sure. may have to try dc++ and see if i can get on the UM hub though.
What's annoying about Kazaa and programs like that are those spy ware programs and everything. Totally fucks your computer.

Soulseek works great for music... but Bittorrent is the best for getting all the newest movies and games, you just have to be patient.

Soulseek is great fo rmusic, tons of full length albums. Does DC++ have full length albums too? I've downloaded it and used it to get a few Dreamcast games before, but never any music. Does someone have a walkthrough or something they could share for connecting to the UM hub and searching for files?

I downloaded 30 albums last night, one of which was Daath's latest. Must say, i'm not impressed. They've got a very minimalist approach which I don't think works very well for a whole album, or as heavy death metal.

But I've been a fan for a long time and I was corresponding with Eyal via email for like a year, so I feel a bit obligated to try and spread their name. Their next album is going to be entirely in the Filter/black flame vein of techno/death metal that made me a fan from the start, so I can put up with one "OK" album as long as they nail the next one. Have you heard their older tracks? They didn't even have a drummer, but damn did they shine on that demo.
And for the record, I'm not even sure if I like Townsend. Everyone seems to hang off his nuts, but last night I downloaded Terria, Ocean Machine, Accelerated Evolution, and the newest Strapping Young Lad and personally I don't think it's as special as it's made out to be.

I've got em all, and use all regularly (apart from Kazaa) and I have to say, from my experience, Soulseek tops the lot.
Oh, and if you're going to use Bit Torrent, you're best off using ABC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pingpong-abc/) for your client.
