The 602 is pretty cool in my opinion, really solid lows and by adding some upper mids you can get a cool metal sound.
ATM25 is pretty cool, tend to have to pull a fair amount of mids out though.
I'm another that REALLY hates the D112.

Audio Technica AE2500 is killer. I think Terry Date is a big fan of those for kick drums. I mixed those trashy drums in something like 5 minutes and the bass drum was AE2500 :

(I didn't record it, but just told the guy to use a couple of room mics which are very important for natural sounding kick drums, too bad the tracks distort all over... I think this sound needs more OH but the tracks are so distorded...)

The D6 is very good too, but I always lowpass it around 8,5 khz to get rid of that Pantera clicky 10 khz.

SM91 is better than Beta91 to me.

Yeah, lots of very smooth mids with the beta 91. Low end can be an issue sometimes...

i'll usually take a 901 or a d6 live... i have to work a little harder to get the 901 sounding bigger but i prefer the attack for rock orientated bands.. the click on the d6 can get a little distracting. but for metal the d6 is so easy to get a good sound quickly.. beware the 901 wont fit inside a 4" bass drum hole which seem to be getting more popular..

I'm a big replacer when it comes to Kick, but i always prefer to mic up and get a decent sound from the kit being recorded and use that rather than another sample...

...my question is, has anyone tried using a Shure SM7?? I tried one and got some pretty decent results...

SM7 sounds great but has quite some bleed from the rest of the kit...
I sometimes put it there and blend it in for some more `ooemf`

We were using at the studio SM91 inside + Beta 52 just inside the bass drum and it was sounding great. Tried SM91 inside + U87 outside the other day, and BAM, instant boner. And that was with a Pearl Export kit...

If I ever find a way to make a tunel, i will try SM91 inside, BEta 52 just inside the hole and U87 and the end of the tunel.
