yeah i also have an engine that won't break down if (when) the timing belt breaks. this is good design imo. i have no idea when it was last changed so my strategy is to drive til it snaps

haha!
(sorry Erik)
:erk:

I'm replacing the fender and headlight of my smashed up car this afternoon. So far I got the fender on and I'm going to install the headlight as soon as I'm done eating some tamales. It's a fairly difficult job because of all the plastic body cladding Outbacks have. It's all held on by those horrid plastic bolts/screws/whatever the fuck you call them and they almost always break

Ugh, I HATE those fucking things. They make a simple task like replacing an inner fender such a pain in the ass. Nevermind finding the right fucking size.

I have a real problem with an OUTER fender actually being secured by those things. I mean, REALLY?

i gotta buy a new driver's side rear wheel trim piece also. its been broken for over a year already. I think like 12 of those stupid plastic things holding a piece that's like 24"

Will this lead it to the grave? How much would/will it cost to replace it? (had to google to be certain that it means kamrem, we don't learn enough about cars in english classes in school)

Timing belt presto-change-o is next for me. It's not a task for the faint of heart. In fact, it's pretty horrible....especially on a boxer engine.

Done with the fender/headlight deal...except for paint.

The plastic fasteners on the cladding/bumper turned out to be not so bad after I figured out Subaru actually put some thought into them. I'm used to Ford's fasteners which would invariably break off as they came loose. I never was able to put the Ranger's interior back together

What is this piece specifically?

Inner fender....worst part of any car. Except for maybe underbody panels. Those things break as you're driving off the dealer's lot
My friend spent some ungodly amount of money (hundredS) on the cracked under-engine cover on her VW. I told her she could've just unbolted it and thrown it in the garbage.

the piece in the foreground around the rear wheel ... the black trim with the side indicator built in.
about $100 total with trim, new indicator housing and "clips"

aarrggghhh!!! The Outback's is very similar to that. I had to also remove the long piece along the rocker panel to get to the fender bolts.
Do you know how that piece is attached? The Subaru has replaceable plastic fasteners that fit in little pockets on the inside of that piece of trim and then snap into holes that are in the fender. The MINI probably has a similar design.
I bet you could take out the inner fender, slide a tool up under the lip of the trim and carefully pop those plastic fasteners out.....if that's how it's made. I have no idea.

What happened to it in the first place? Cracked?

Yeah, for the most part, they are kinda useless. The one on my wife's nissan though, the passenger side, the oil filter is right there. Luck would have it, that she'd be driving down the highway, have a small stone thrown up and puncture the fucking thing. Unlikely, but yeah...

3 months after I bought my Accord, my passenger side inner fender flew off on the highway. I was en route with this whore to her house after a night out of drinking and whatnot. All of the sudden, BANG-CRUNCH!!!...scared the fuck out of me. I thought I hit something in the road. It was just my inner fender. I ended up being cheap and buying a cheap imitation one and now every time I go over a decent bum or speedbump, it kinda crunches on that side. :tickled:

Same thing happened to my wife's inner fender about 9 months ago, sans me and the whore.

I think the Subaru is the same you're right. Except much thicker and bigger Lesbian grade plastic.

And yes, you can take out the inner fender cover and pop the plastic fasteners ... if you have the hand of a 8 year old. I have to take the wheel off for this operation.

Some dude clipped me last year on the hwy at some serious speed, just enough to pop this piece off and break it and somehow gave me a rear flat as well.

my daughter was on that side of the car and I nearly had a heart attack as I saw him coming balls out in the rear-view. couldn't even chase the fucker because of the flat ... as of course he didn't stop.
