Kirk Hammett

i know, i just wrote it because loomis doesnt use wah, and in this "topic" he is better than loomis, i hope i made myself understood now
i think you'll find he does, final product solo comes to mind first off

Having taught guitar lessons for a few years (I quit in 2004 to focus more on my own music) I've noticed that Kirk inspires a lot of beginners to get into lead guitar. Only to have their shitty technique corrected with my help later. ;)

My favorite technique of Kirk's is his approach to fingertapping - hit the frets with your right and left hand at the same time, in a haphazard quasi-swing rhythm (atop an overtly non-swinging musical context.) No end to the hilarious possibilities there...

With all this talk of them inspiring young players into lead, I can't recall who inspiried me to get into lead. I know damn well it wasn't Hammett. I think it was Trey Azagthoth (aka George Emmanuel, III aka sort of sloppy but he loves the reverb), Dimebag and Zakk Wylde (aka Jeffery Phillip Wiedlandt aka doesn't sound as cool as Zakk Wylde).

You know whats funny...about Kirk and his overkill wah usage...back in high-school, me and friend use to joke about Kirk Hammet getting some deal with a company that made a signature series boot for him. One of them would have a Dunlop wah pedal built into it as the sole. And then it would end up being the new rage/style to have guitar effect pedals built into your boots. And then Andy Sneap would figure out how to do it better than anyone else to create the sickest wah-boot tone of all time. Ahem, anyway. It was funny as hell to imagine it back in the day.

I was always more inspired by Marty Friedman and Alex Skolnick to pick up the ol axe... not to say Im that good, mind you, just sharing an inspirational story... or something.

I've been hesitant to add to this thread for a while, but after several drinks this evening I feel obligated to intervene. First let's get one thing straight: I hate Metallica and I want them to burn a flaming fireball death or, better yet just keep getting worse so I can continue to laugh at them more and more with each new offering.

That being said, I'm gonna defend Kirk's playing. He is not the most technically savvy guitarista, but that guy has it where it counts. He's got soul and his solos on every record all rock. They may be a little dependent on wah, but hey they all fit the music real effing well.

And this reminds me of two of my favorite all time solos, both by Mr. Robert Flynn on the second tracks of MH's first 2 albums. Very Hammettish, wah-heavy, but fucken rocking. I don't know if there's a point to this post but I just felt like saying it.

I'm going to go throw up now.

One thing I've always wondered is if he fucked up on his clean solo on "One" on the AJFA cd and they just let it slide. Do you guys know what part I'm talking about? He's doing this tapping thing and then at the very end, maybe the last couple notes it sounds very amateurish. (FYI I noticed that before I even started playing guitar.)
