Krank amps

Love my Rev Jr Pro... Playing (modern) Death Metal with it, as well as Hard Rock/Alternative (think Faith No More)... and I tend to keep the settings almost the same!

Just played an Open-Air last weekend with it... Yep, with a 20 Watts head!

That's exactly the reason, why I got it (despite the good sound ofc). I just can't picture myself to ever again carry full-sized heads, especially Engls which I predominantly used before, out on tour.

Krankenstein can be unimpressive playing on its own if you are after an aggressive tone, especially at low volume. You really need to get the volume up to get it sounding nice. IMO the main strength of the Krank can be heard under a mic in a mix, where it somehow just fits in magically a la recto (which also can shound shitty when played on its own at low volumes).

Also, sloppy guitarists need not play Krank.

I played a Krankenstein in a shop once for a very brief amount of time and it was very uninspiring to me, but I was at very low volumes so I didn't judge it too harshly. It just seemed like a very hard amp to play.

Then not so long ago I went to a different shop where I could be a lot louder and played one with a 1527, and even with those terrible stock pickups it sounded a lot better, because I spent more time trying to dial it into something decent and wasn't trying to dial it in like I did my old Marshall.

It still struck me as an amp that was quite hard to play - in a similar way that Genius Gone Insane says that sloppy guitarists shouldn't play them - but I'm sure at an even higher volume, with an overdrive pedal and some better pickups, it wouldn't be that bad. I thought the same thing about my Rectifier until I used an overdrive pedal and now the thing is pure sweet sugary bliss.

Kranks are really expensive over here, and so new/rare that it's hard to find one used. Mesas are even MORE expensive, but they're everywhere used, which is why I could totally hit one. ;)

I have a Revolution Series One upgraded with the Plus model transformers. Best head ever!
The 4x12 cab is great but it has to be loud, the Legends just sound a little brittle when not pushed hard.
For my "quiet" gigs, I use a Hotplate at -8 and a Krank 2x12 loaded with Swamp Thangs. They feel a little softer and get great creamy lead tones at a lower volume than the Legends do.
I'm boosting with a Krankshaft for leads. Pup is a Bare Knuckle Nail Bomb.
