I guess I dont even feel much towards the true maiden really either, perhaps I am feeling a little out of touch, Perhaps I just need to listen more I dont know. Its kinda hard to appreciate the band when theres a family link there, maybe taking things for granted.
I may be merely projecting here, but what I think TimeWarrior2001 is saying is that while anyone can appreciate the music of a band just by hearing it through whatever medium, one appreciates the band themselves much more when the band communicates personally with them, through media such as this forum as well as talking in person after the shows. I noticed this was mentioned by several on the Iron Maiden forum in that particular thread in the Maidens defense, above and beyond their skillful musicianship. I didn't bother posting such, as A) it's already been said there by others and B) if the people who are regular on that forum care about such things they wouldn't spend so much time on a forum for a band whom, due to their worldwide popularity, it would likely be logistically impossible for them to have the level of personal communication with fans that is found here on this forum.
I may love Iron Maiden music, but the odds on me meeting any of them in person (much less having a significant conversation) are pretty much nil. Whereas, I've met all the Iron Maidens, had lengthy conversations (that were honest ones about life, well beyond just talking about how much I dig their or someone else's music) with some, met a significant portion of the road crew, and even met a handful of other regulars of this forum in person. Hell, before the Galxy show in May, several of us here got together at a pizza place (and I'd not met any of them at that point).
Now, TimeWarrior, I imagine you don't exactly get to do this (you being in England), though maybe you've been here and seen them live??? Maybe, maybe not??? But I also imagine you wouldn't post on this forum as much as you do, if some vibes of that personal familiarity didn't reach you even if they have to travel halfway around the world to do it!
Some may use music like a drug, a way to avoid intimacy. It seems to me like the Maidens and many regulars on this forum see music (as I do) as yet another way to create intimacy.
Human beings are social beings. The Maidens understand that pretty well!
