So I have to get a laptop for uni soon, and I'd like to keep the price under $1000. What brands/types do you guys recommend? I'm liking the Dell Studio right now, but give me recs please.

If you build your own laptop on Dell's website, go to the small business option instead of the home one, you can make the exact same computer for cheaper.

No Macbook unless you are doing graphic design (ironic considering I am and have a Dell, but I really would rather have a Macbook or at least a Mac with Windows XP Pro given what I am doing...or at least a comp with more memory...but, it was free so...yeah).

Yeah, I despise Macs, so I won't be getting one, butGarage band rocks. So I guess Dell is the way to go?

Get the extended warranty with a Dell. Your school might give you either a free extended warranty or a discount one. Ideally you're getting 4+ years of use out of this, so make sure it will last that long. I had a Dell, and the fan busted after about a year, but I had the warranty, and they sent a service rep to replace it and it worked out well. Another time I spilled beer, er...water on the keyboard, and they sent me a new one for free. So yeah, get the warranty if you go with Dell. Mine kind of sucked, but I'm assuming they've hammered out some of the problems in the last 4 years. And I still use it, even though it's not my main computer. If you get around five years of use for under $1000, that's a good value.

I recommend a Dell Inspiron for a bunch of reasons I don't want to go into. I've owned one before and they are very reliable, not to mention the price is killer for what you get.

Check them out.

My friend owns a Fagbook (:erk: first thing that came to mind) and it was pretty interesting, but the hardware sucked on it. It constantly overheated because of the way it was put together. The fan never got enough air, and the processor was horrible. I'm pretty sure it was just a cheaper model but still, it was around $900 bucks for that piece of shit.

The only reason I would recommend a Mac to anyone is if they are completely retarded when it comes to using a computer. Otherwise PC's and PC brand computers are far superior in terms of customizing and maitenance.

I have a HP Pavillon laptop, it's a very good laptop, but the think that bothers me is the Windows Vista, it is a terrible OS, full of bugs.
