Layne Staley

hes DEAD! forgetaboutit, or listen to the tunes and rejoice that his fine talent was captured during his life when so many people die without realising their potential!
Can i get that grammy now?

AIC was okay but like most grunge acts they never came out and said that they were just a different form of hard rock\metal. Just alternative - What a crock of shit.

Heroin is no bueno - as Steven Tyler once said "don't try it".

Why would a band have to explain what kind of music they play?!

(Tyler saying don't do drugs? We can't do any Steven, you did them all!)

yes, there must be a 5 minute introduction of each song, describing musical characteristics of the piece they are about to play, and what makes it this particular style. im suprised you didnt already know!

I haven't named a drug. I'm talking about generally. The phrase used was 'junkies'.

junk·ie also junk·y ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jngk)
n. Slang pl. junk·ies
A narcotics addict, especially one using heroin.
One who has an insatiable interest or devotion: a sports junkie.

Most people have an addiction to something. Some people have a very addictive personality, that's where it gets tricky. Greg, you probably fall into that catagory which is why you had to quit and I'm glad you did, cos it's right for you. BUT that doesn't mean you now have free reign to moralise about everyone else's choices.

...and yes, I KNOW it's in the constitution that you can say "whatever the fuck you like" etc, etc...but that doesn't mean you should word your comments to purposely offend just to prove you can ("the sympathy this guys rotting corpse gets astounds me..." or "He apparantley couldn't value the life he had so he threw it away". It doesn't mean anyone should praise or miss him"). People will value your comments more if you don't give the impression that you're trying to hurt them or wind them up. There's just no point unless they're really ignorant, offensive pricks who will never see sense and then it's FUN to wind them up...I'm thinking of Milano here.

Incidentally, I'm utterly fucked whilst typing this.

:)

It's a fact that he was a junkie.
It's a fact that he's dead and his corpse is rotting.
What's offensive about that?
You should find it offensive that he cut short the life of a great band b/c of his addictions.
I don't care if anyone values my comments or not. I say what I feel and stand behind my words and actions. I'm not a limp dick in the breeze flopping from one side to the other.
I also don't need you telling me the best way to convey my thoughts.

I'm not telling you anything Greg. I'm commenting. That's what a forum is for.

And just cos something is a fact doesn't mean you HAVE TO word it so calously. It's almost as if you're laughing at people who die from drugs, which, by your own admission, is a little close to the bone for you. But as you well know, you can say whatever you like, just don't expect everyone else to be a limp dick in the breeze either. If someone says something I don't like, I'll respond. I would have thought you of all people would respect that.

I'm glad this hasn't resorted to abuse. It's a nice change.

Grunge bands hid from what they really were - they don't have to categorize themselves but be real about what they're playing. Soundgarden saying they weren't metal on the Grammy's was a joke when we all know they're pretty heavy and play solos.

Grunge was big on alternative radio which is strange, since alternative (new music, now I'm dating myself) was about the opposite of grunge was, i.e. not a lot of solos, long boring songs.

I see what you mean now DD.

In the UK we didn't really have a great music media during the whole grunge thing, only a few magazines, so I don't know what most bands said.

I don't think bands generally do know what they're like though, do they? I mean most people who make music are too close to it to realise what other people see in it.

Every band on the planet thinks their new CD is "their best yet" and eventually "go back to their roots", only to discover that they have no idea what their roots are!

Anyway, yes...I kinda agree. Grunge was just a name to sell rock/metal bands. Not groundbreaking, just good music.

:)

Ross - it was just a strange animal I guess. Distorion like punk but a lot of songs like Zeppelin or something like that. :Spin:

Cheers is it happy hour yet.

I wish more mainstream bands would cross genres..not in a self-conscious Limp Biscuit way - just by listenin to a wider variety of music and then writing whatever comes out.

...but that'd take their time away from spending their money I guess.

Hope it's happy hour where you are!

:)

it sucks real bad that he's dead but he made the choice to OD. And raga and greg are being blunt. but if you look at it what they have to say is true and i'm not about to tell them they're wrong not to pity him even though i do. i pity laynes family more though and that includes Jerry Cantrell who will never be the same musically without AIC's other half. and i'm sorry, it was a shitty thing for layne to do to them. just like it was a shitty thing for Kurt to leave his little girl alone with someone even more twisted on drugs than he was. If people would just try. thier heads would clear.

TD is that you?

KISS are soft rock. TO ME.
I'm so sorry I screwed up my dates on that old assed megadeth thread. We've already been through this.
If you OD then you're a complete moron. W/ no value of life.
And everyone on OZZFEST sells out when they sign the dotted line for Sharon.

That is MY logic, if you don't like it - choke on shit.

Greg, I may agree with you on a lot of things, but Layne was not a waste of flesh. The man had a way with words like almost no other and he could write some amazing shit. Almost anyone could relate to his lyrics. And the last few years he was a social hermit. He is missed by me at least.
