Les Légions Noires

I appreciate the direction that the French scene is taking BM, but I've yet to hear anything (except Blut Aus Nord's The Work Which Transforms God) that has been on par with the old Norwegian BM.

There's a lot of overrated shit, but your statement makes me think that you've hardly listened to anything from France.

I would like to re-edit myself and also put in DsO's latest album as a great French BM album.

But Omni, you are probably right, I've only heard most BAN's and DsO's material, then some songs from Mütiilation, Vlad Tepes and Eternal Majesty. However, I did say I've yet to hear

For starters, listen to the first couple of Belenos albums and Hirilorn's album. Those are pretty good and worth returning to many times.

Also I just can't get to grips with the lo-fi buzz stuff, i know of course there's monetary and other circumstances limiting a productions quality but blatantly crackling plastic wrap or recording their echo or whatever the fuck else they do is just stupid. you can prove a point/create your mise en scene without being an asshat about it.
Yeah, the only excessively lo-fi material I enjoy is Paysage d'Hiver's work (EVERYONE should check out the self-titled tape).

Some of Striborg's early tapes (such as Cold Winter Moon) are almost unlistenable due to the extremely annoying high-pitched hiss in the production.

Belenos is pretty cool.
+1

Nah, old Belenos is definitely worth listening to, certainly more than the band in your avatar which is pretty much one of the worst "black metal" bands that I've seen hyped on this site.

So whats the general opinion on the NSBM-oriented french scene? Like Kristallnacht, Blessed in Sin, etc? It's years ago since I listened to any of them so don't really remember if they are worth it.

Nehëmah is another pretty good french band I guess.

I used to own an album by Nehëmah, it was about as average as black metal gets. Belenos, however, is pretty cool, at least on Errances Oniriques.

Bekhira's L' Elu Du Mal is worthy French BM that seems to have gone pretty unnoticed.

Nehëmah is good but very standard. That said, they've never released anything below average.

c_e, I'd argue that everything by Hirilorn is essential listening, but Legends of Evil and Eternal Death is one of the best French BM albums ever. Just so fucking good.

The French NSBM I've heard struck me as pretty boring and not much of a contribution to the genre. I find some of the Polish bands and some of the Blazebirth Hall and other Russian bands to be far more interesting.

Mutillation = Excellent, but I quickly ventured somewhere else after that. I need to hear some Vlad Tepes they sound promising.

To whoever mentioned Burzum being DSBM - :erk: what?

and forgotten woods is crap as far as DSBM is concerned......ya.....

I'll be willing to give that opinion a chance because I have their discography on one of my computers, but what I did spend time with was...eh....I prefer bethlehem.
