I automate alot now that its so easy in Sonar X1. Kicks during double bass sections, rhythm guitars during solos. snares and toms during fills, vocals especially delays and verbs on them.
VCA and their automation on top of tracks automation, trim mode for each automation mode (so awesome), the manual write and write on stop, the capture and preview, auto join and auto match...
Yeah I hate not having VCA/TRIM in LE. TRIM especially is the absolutely best thing for doing layer upon layer of automation simply by coalescing each time.

Well, say you have automated a part, and you realize you need an extra db here, maybe .5 db there, etc. Instead of reautomating again, you just automate in Trim mode, which will add or subtract to your current automation. Then you are free to leave it as it is (with the two automations) or coalesce the result.
One of the cool things I forgot to tell about PTHD automation: prime latch on stop.

I know everyone is different and I don't record other people so that affects my opinion greatly. However I try to use the least automation possible. I try to incorporate any level changes or effects swaps during takes. Not only do i end up with a cleaner and less stressed sessions, but I get REALLY good at performing my parts in a live fashion.
