Letting a signed band use my riffs...

wow, what an honor! I'd personally would want my name in the song writing credits for that song, added to the thank list, and a couple of copies of the CD.

^^^Yeah, some free copies of the album, and your name in the thank list :D that would be pretty cool. Who is the band? come on dude, your music kicks ass so bad! Please say who is trying to takeyour riffs!

If they are signed, they have to register all tracks in the copyright company (you have to do this in Spain).
Ask them to include you as 20-30% of the rights. Of course you will have to be a member os the copyright company of your country. If the song is succesful and played on radios, compilations, or whatever, you will earn some bucks.

Cool. Negotiate whatever you find fitting as an up-front payment and then insist to be given compositional credits for the song, so you'll get the deserved royalties.

These are my initial thoughts on it - figure out an easy up-front number for compensation, but just make sure that they give you compositional credit on the song they use your riff in.

i'm with lasse on this one...unless they're pretty well known, or signed to a pretty major label, i would settle for a bit of cash along with a songwriting credit for the use of a single riff

Ola: to be honest, there is absolutely no legal, ethical or moral reason why you can't name a band that is interested in your riff!

Unless you think this would somehow lead them to not want to buy your riff ...

Well, first I would ask the band what kind of compensation they had thought about. If possible I'd try to get registered as one of the authors for that particular song with the copyright collecting society. Depending on how they split their royalties within the band that might get you something from a 1/4 to a 1/6 or so. That means money for every CD printed and every performance of the song. If you are lucky they might put in on a Live DVD at some point later in their career and the money keeps rolling in. It might not be a whole lot but I guess it's save to say it could be around a few hundred Euros in the first two years if they play/tour a lot. If you don't think that the band will be successful see if you can get an upfront payment or some other kind of compensation that suits you. I don't think it's that unrealistic to get a royalties share.
Anyway, just ask them what they had thought about first and then tell us. ;)

I've had a few bands buy off my riffs and always did a buyout. It's the most simple and realistic approach. Like Lasse said, no band or label will go through all that trouble for a riff...no matter how cool or unique it may be. Consider yourself lucky that they didn't just steal the riff, which I've had done to me quite a few times (didn't bother to take legal actions though). That's why I worry about everyone posting their songs on here because I know there are shitty bands/people that do this. Also whether a band is signed or not is really irrelevant these days as it really depends on the label and what they're doing with the band. How much airtime/touring/promotion they get is what really matters. Anyways, charge a fixed price and leave it at that...
