Is there any way to mod the direct out of the Spider II so it sounds better?

you could run the effects send into your computer and use impulses for cabinet models. you would then have pretty much a big pod lol

unfortunately line 6's d.o.'s are horrible. the only solution i've found so far is jsut to mic the speakers old school.
