I've only got a few minutes on this computer terminal, and I'm going to use it to the fullest extent to let off some steam.

Yesterday I'm walking down the street, and across the road what do I see but a pack of clean cut well dressed young american boys...instantly reconizable as missionaries.
I'm on my way to the train station (running late as usual) so I don't have time do more than finger the bastards, but oh how I was aching to jump across the road and send them running my my foot lodged part way up their collective ass.
What the fuck possesses young guys the same age as myself to not only devote thier lives to fallacy, but also come here to a perfectly well functioning society and try to pedal thier shit?
If you go to another country you should respect the local people and learn what you can from and about them.

well, this thread is certainly good timing. There is another missionary-bashing thread too.

Yes, I totally agree that it's completely disrespectful to visit someone else's country and impose your shit on them. I thought missionaries only went to third world countries anyway, wow.

Well, it just demonstrates something that we already knew about their intellectual curiosity and awareness of the world. What a waste.

It's my understanding that a considerable percentage of South Koreans are (Protestant) Christians anyway. So I wonder what they're involvment there might be, insofar as they are more like redundancies than intrusions.

The one example that I just can't even begin to comprehend is the Western missionaries (We heard about a couple of Aussies involved anyway) that happened to preach Christianity in Afghanistan, (before the military campaign) where it is a crime punishable by death. Apparently they were primarily doing humanitarian work, which leads me to ask why they couldn't just not risk trouble by leaving out the added rhetoric? It signals more than just lack of respect, but also lack of common sense?! :(

I guess missionaries operate on a different plane of thought from Opeth Forum Members.

Wow... it's almost like the exact same thing I posted about... except I didn't just wanna shove my foot up their ass... I wanted to pull a shotgun on them... oh well... *sigh*... ignorant people

I keep getting told that it's around 25% but somehow I get the feeling that it's a little higher, because there are churehes littering the skyling everywhere. I'm also using the strength of christianity+confucianism influences on Korean culture as a scapegoat on which to blame my current drought. Maybe things'll change for the better once I get to Seoul next weekend.
wish me luck

I feel for you guys. I attend college at San Diego State, and, as theyare required to provide a forum for EVERYONE (which I do agree with), I have to walk through what I refer to as "The Guantlet". This the main building on campus, that you have to walk through to get to class. Here is what is called the "free speech" area. On a given day I get to contend with "Jews For Jesus", "Mormon Student Union", "Christian Student Union", "Hare Krishna Mission", "Muslim Student Union", "Catholic Student Union", the "Black Jews", the "African's for Homeland Superiority (Or whatever they're called)", The Conservative Student Group, blah blah blah.....My favorite day was when I wore my Sadistic Intent shirt (bac reads: Your God Will be Destroyed) through the Aztec Center (thats the real name of the Gauntlet). Those people drive me crazy....just accept that other people have differing beliefes and that you are merely offending, upsetting, angering and insulting the intelligence of some people...arghhhhhhh

True, but when foreign religious groups enter my country, and they do, lots, we are told to bend over and take it up the ass in case we inhibit their religious practices.

I've got no problem with religious people teaching their religion, if they genuinely believe their religious teachings then they believe they are saving your soul from damnation or cleansing your karma etc. so it's not maliciousness on their part. Shamefully though, gross evangelism often is badly practiced is done insultingly and inappropriately, that's why no-one can stand them!

What bothers me is that when I go to e.g. Bahrain, I have to respect holy times and be seen to act according to local religious custom and my female family members have to wear purdah, but in my country we post police escorts to protect religious 'rights of practise' at centres where fundamentalists preach and plan religious terror activity. Grrrrrr
