I'm always looking for new albums to check out, whether it's prog, power, death, or black metal. Has anybody heard anything recently that totally blew them away? If so, please post your suggestions!!!

Let me see here... I'm really into this album Dawning by Archetype right now. Check that one out if you havn't already...

And I noticed in another thread you were asking about Pain of Salvation. The Perfect Element pt. 1 is an amazing album. I recommend checking that one out...

Godiva!! New band from Switzerland--produced by Tom Nauman (Primal Fear) same style as Primal Fear-- great straight ahead metal!!! Goes great with a 12-pack!!!!

These are some of the recent ones I have picked up and thought were good.

Rage - Sound Chaser
Moonspell - The Antidote
Godiva - S/T
Eidolon - The new one. Sorry can't remember the name of it.

I just got the new King Diamond " The Puppet Master" today. It also rocks. Plus I forgot to mention that you should add Cage "Blacker Than Black" to your list.

Check out Solefald's newest album "In Harmonia Universali". Weird avant-garde metal that's both brilliant and catchy. Really great stuff, one of the best albums of 2003, easily.

Given that you like death and black metal as well, you should definitely give Arcturus a listen. both their second and third albums "La Masquerade Infernale" and "The Sham Mirrors" are just amazing: quasi-operatic experimental black metal art something-or-other-nameless-thing. The first album is decent too but it's more standard black metal. anyway, just an awesome band, if you don't already know them.

If you like the early Tad Morose (i.e. pre Urban Breed), you will enjoy the now defunct band Twilight (see below). Imagine the progressive Tad Morose (e.g. Sender of Thoughts), but with a much more agressive vocalist (but still melodic and clean) and agressive sound while still retaining the eerie, dark, atmospheric vibe. Actually, I found out about this band at PPIV when one of their songs (An Eye for an Eye) was played over the PA between sets.

CD-1 - "The Edge"
CD 2 - "An Eye for an Eye"

Twilight was active in the 1990s, but disappeared until they reformed in 2001 as "Beyond Twilight", releasing "The Devil's Hall of Fame." Another excellent CD, but with a different vocalist (Jorn Lande). People seem to love or hate this disc. I didn't care for it much at first (except for the power ballad "Crying" which prompted me to buy the disc), but it grew on me quickly. Very unique stuff that I can't say sounds readily like anything else.

I highly recommend all of the above if you like crisp, polished prog/power metal. Black and Death metal junkies may want to take a listen before buying.
