lock out

The whole idea of it is to stop people who get kicked out or denied entry at one place from trying to get into another place. Before, if that happened, you'd just go to the next pub and try your luck there. Now, if it's after a certain time, you know you won't be allowed in so you're more likely to just call it a night. I do agree that it's dumb to have exemptions in a place where most of the trouble is, though.

Its not just one or two places nowdays, the violence after dark in this country has grown to epademic proportions. What does it say about a community that has to hire security guards to escort people to taxi ranks after midnight.

The new taxes on pre mixed drinks has done one thing, ensured that people are getting even more fueled up before they go out. Instead of buying a 6pack or premixed whatever, they are buying a bottle and mixing it themselves because its cheaper, and they have no idea of the alcholic content. Its getting to the point where I dont want to go out after dark.

I can hear the choruses of "The glory of love" starting up.....im thinking about learning some form of self defence

Classifying that as binge drinking does nothing but distort the stats, as far as I'm concerned. How ridiculous.

I agree re the tax on pre-mixed drinks. It's now not much more expensive to buy a bottle of Beam or something than to get a 6 pack, so why wouldn't you buy a bottle and mix your own. If people are like me and mix their own drinks stronger than the pre-mixes, they're gonna get tanked.

It's not four drinks in a session, it's four drinks in a day. And a "drink" is a glass of wine or a middy (pot) of beer. So if you drink schooners (pints), by the time you're onto your third that's already a binge. How ridiculous. Most blokes I know can knock over three schooies during a footy game. In the first half.

Typical moving goalposts.

My old man has high blood pressure. Doc and Dad put in a heap of work to get to the "target" of 12/80.

As soon as the "target" was reached, Doc set a new target of 110/70, and wanted to up the does of drugs (to kidney damaging range).

They always have to have something to work on, otherwise they become irrelevant.

I binge every time I goto the local footy then...I am the 4 schooners in the first half bloke, then 5 or 6 in the second half, then a few more with the boys after the game, so I binge every fortnight :headbang:

Thats the thing, when we were young we had mix to our own and kids mixes are always crazy, not to mention you were obliged to finish the 750ml bottle you brought to the party or you'd be called a pussy! So it seems to me we are regressing, logic would suggest kids nowdays are actually drinking weaker drinks and buying them in smaller quantities (most RTDs come in packs of four).

If people want to drink too much they are going to. When it comes to younger people especially I don't think it makes much difference being able to know how much they have had of RTDs, they still won't necessarily be able to predict what effect it will have on them each time. I find a 6 pack of beer never treats me the same way.

Hasn't 4 drinks been classified as a binge because from that point the odds of untoward things happening to you increase significantly?

It's based on the the limit of alcohol you can take a day before it starts damaging your health. Somebody made a point earlier about BMI and age making a difference, but the difference it makes, medically, is very small. Alcohol is a poison. Your body processes it and absorbs it at the virtually the same rate regardless of whether you are Willie Mason or Rove McManus. Some people take less doses to appear intoxicated than others -- they start acting or feeling drunk quicker than another person -- but in reality everyone gets intoxicated at the same rate.

I still have a problem with the four-drinks-a-day thing being defined as a "binge" though.

me too.

four drinks a day (i assume they mean "every" or "most days") is a habit, not a binge.

a binge is something that i might do once a month or something, where i go out and drink a shitload, get pretty drunk, have fun, come home and think "jesus... that was great but i don't think i'll want to do it again for a while!"

i reckon binge drinking is way less bad that habitual drinking.

i suppose that's not really the point they are trying to make though.

how many of us would drink four drinks a day? I used to drink anywhere between two to four drinks most days (somedays a couple more) plus try to have an alcohol free day once a week. Lately I've been trying to cut back, infact I just went almost two weeks without a drink which was a bit of amazement for myself. Partly motivated by health and partly by cash flow.
