I must have been using Logic's included ESX24 sampler for at least 3 years and I've only just figured this one out...
When using this sampler to play back drum samples with lots of mixed velocity content, I always found the hits with lower velocity to be played back much quieter than the actual files which sounded snare rolls, fills and playing in general sound like inconsistent playing.
I just
loco discovered bringing up the bottom part of the level slider in the main window
all the way will play all samples at their original level (or around -9dB for little subtlety).
Thought I'd share in case anybody else is as stupid as me!
