In the studio they do something called sound replacement, you mic everything and trigger all the kicks and toms, to get a sharp wav form recorded down, then you sound replace the drum hits if need be, the triggered track will be just be the good clean hits with no back ground noise, that you can use to sound replace with, mixing the sound replaced sound with the natrual sound of the drum. for live instinces, Andy only triggers his kick drum, "he has a double pedal" cause everything sounds more natrual, if you have great samples and a great modual like the ddrum modual to handle them, its best to trigger and mic up everythiing as well for your live performance. reffer to the sound of drum son this gojira live video. http://www.gojira-music.com/videos/gojira-remembrance2.html
Cool, thanks for all the help. I'm not recording myself anytime soon, so I probably won't spend the money for mics or complete triggers, but I may get the bass drum trigger for shows and practices. I don't have anything as nice as a ddrum brain, but I have the brain for my electric set (1300$ roland practice set), which I can plug into.
Even though I'm not playing straight death, the best acoustic bass drum I've heard was played with very heavy beaters, like the big DWs. My iron cobra beaters are a lot faster, but sound like crap.
Follow up question: If I'm trigger my bass drum what should I do to the heads? Should I keep them tight and muffled as hell?
My iron cobra beaters are a lot faster, but sound like crap. - yeah ANDY IS SELLING HIS AXIS LONGBOARD PETALS!! I WILL POST IT UP SOON. but Andy likes his Iron Cobras better, i have heard the differance first hand, but to each to their own, Andy played great on AXIS but seems to be tighter for him to use Iron Cobras.

But seriously, I am not allowed to complain about my pedals ever, because Proscriptor, the drummer of Absu, uses them (and I know now Andy). Until I'm as fast as them, I can't blame the pedals for anything.
I ordered a dDrum kick trigger which should show up soon, until then I have one pillow in my bass, which I'm thinking of adding to when I trigger it. I don't know yet if hearing the bass (in addition to hearing the trigger) would be a problem.
Since there is supposed to be a way to import new sounds into an electric set's brain, does anyone know somewhere where I could get some sounds. I would hope theres a better way than just looking through death metal songs to see if I can steal a clip of an isolated bass drum.
