the bowels of lochness
based on what I like so far....

French black metal:
early aclest
blut aus nord
peste noire
considering french black metal I just recently heard about Mutiilation and heard they were the catalyst for bands like these and was thinking about checking them out.

other:
drudkh
silencer
early beherit
nachtmystium
walknut
the ruins of beverast (damn good bm)
darkspace
nokturnal mortum
coldworld
cobalt
weakling
shining

what I've heard so far but have not learned to like/love it...yet...
enslaved - below the lights, isa
emperor - anthems and into the nightside eclipse
deathspell omega - requires circumspice (you kno, THAT album)

ved buens ende - written in waters (debut) - like some of it but it is such a complex album that I have not fully grasped the last 4-5 songs

wolves in the throne room - heard diadem of the 12 stars but did not like it too much, probably didn't spend enough time with it (since some of the songs are 20 mins) or is just a really boring album.

Absu, takes a lot of influence from the first wave of thrashier bm
Antestor, a bit symphonic
Borknagar's first album, raw and melodic
Darkspace, spacey and atmospheric
Dawn, very melodic
Enslaved's early stuff (keep trying with their newer prog stuff, its just as great, if not better)
Evroklidon, big Burzum influence
Immortal, required listening
Kampfar, folky melodies though still quite raw
Lunar Aurora, raw and atmospheric
Negura Bunget, atmospheric and on the prog side
Night Conquers Day, symphonic and thrashy
Tearstained, same as Night Conquers Day
Strid, Burzum-ish
Urfaust, raw and atmospheric
Zemial, thrashy

Alot of the bands you listed are not TRUE bm in the trooest sense.

then what is true black metal?

I forgot to mention I already listen to burzum, gris, negura bungent, lurker of chalice, and I love early ulver and some of their later works. I've also heard 666 international and thought it was the most weird shit ever....

I've heard mayhem and urfaust already and thought they were horrible, but I have been meaning to check out darkthrone again.

Yeah dude Cobalt and Alcest are true like Eminem is black, so I won't restrict my list to "true" bands.
