Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath and Gothenburg metal) is a subgenre of death metal. Originally the genre combined the harmony style and groove melodies of heavy metal with the harsh thrashing sound and vocals of death metal. Later the genre evolved due to many different influences, a notable evolution in the genre being the addition of keyboards.

How the fuck ARE they?

They're melodeath with faggoty keyboards.

They're not. The music contains no rhythmic syncopation (death metal influence which is prevalent in melo-death even to some extent) and contains a hell of a lot of over the top melodies, galloping sections, and major key wankery on keys/guitar. Definitely power metal. If you changed the vocals you'd get typical PM. Melo-death is often at least somewhat death metal influenced, even if it doesn't "sound like" death metal (if it sounds like death metal, chances are it IS, just has more melody than typical DM does).

Also, early COB is speed metal.

w0rd. although sometimes you just have to pump some out. They do have fookin' epic keyboards.

Although there is some much more epic metal, like Bal-Sagoth.

COB = speed/power metal with harsh vocals,There is some contention regarding the band's genre classification, but in general the band's musical style can be described as a cross between melodic death metal and power metal. Children of Bodom's genre classification is debated amongst fans and critics. The band could be part of several musical genres, among them power metal, thrash metal, neo-classical metal, speed metal, and melodic death metal. The term "Tuonela Metal", recently introduced by Finnish press, albeit rare should be taken into some consideration, due to its expressiveness (i.e., its reference to the Ade, the Reign of Shadows) and to its implicit tribute to Jean Sibelius, the most representative Finnish composer. Laiho, however, says that he prefers to just be called a metal group and nothing other.

Of course he doesn't care what they're called, but fans want accurate classifications by means of establishing and evaluating criteria which puts bands with similar sounds into the same category for easy recommendation, etc. Not even close to thrash metal, sorry.

bodom have elements of melodeath, power metal, speed metal, and whatnot. Doesn't matter. You can recommend them for power metal, melodic death metal, and speed metal. But you probably shouldn't.
