Aside from a bit of Stratovarius, Conception and Sonata Arctica (yes I know I'm gay), I've never checked out much power metal, other than maybe some progressive power stuff like Symphony X. What are some good albums for a beginner? I mostly listen to progressive, thrash, and (non-brutal) death metal, if that helps.

Could try Sabaton, find Attero Dominatus by them. Look for Metal Machine as well, lyrics are made up of metal album names. Same with Metal Crue

Also an obvious one but Keeper Of The Seven Keys by Helloween.

Here are four bands that all have a very different approach and sound:

Kamelot:

Kiuas:

Suspyre - A Great Divide (prog/power)
Dark Empire - Humanity Dethroned (thrash/prog with catchy choruses and power metal vocals)

Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
Human Fortress - Lord Of Earth And Heaven's Heir (or the lesser Defenders of the Faith, but definitely not Eternal Empire)
Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands (I or II, both kick ass)
Avantasia - The Metal Opera Pt. I (II is not as good)

And in the American style, Omen - Battle Cry kicks ass.

I'm actually loving all the stuff Einherjer posted, surprisingly. Haven't got a chance to check the other recs out yet, I'll have more time once the weekend rolls around.
