Many threads here have asked "What is that backwards track?", or "What did he say?".

Is there any software that can take a wave file, extract a component of that file for listening? For instance, my favorite Grip Inc. song (Hostage To Heaven) has some backward voicing. Can I copy from my CD to a .wav file, extract the piece of the song I want, drown out the instruments, and reverse the direction to hear what is said?

I have cool edit that will let you do a lot more (I think it's shareware, so u may be able to download it :loco: ) But ur odinary windows sound recorder will let you reverse stuff. As for the ripping from cd's to WAV'smost MP3 players do that as do most cr burning programs. Infact the only bit I couldn't do I think is drown out the other instruments, but I don't know much about this stuff so... :)

use cdex (www.cdex.com) to extract songs to .wavs.. it has
some really nice options (you can also use it to encode
mp3's using the nicer codecs like LaME). Cool Edit works
great for splicing and dicing wav files.. I once used it to
append the ending of In Flames' "Everdying" to "Timeless",
since the guitar work sound so similar :)

http://www.syntrillium.com/download/ to get cooledit

But does any software deal with tracks, where you are able to extract a track (ie: voice, or just guitar) from a piece? I can copy from CD, take a portion of a song - reverse it, etc., but have been unable to make it like a multi-track environment.

Or is it impossible to seperate the tracks in .wav format?

Hey MetalManCPA,

You can do this a number of ways...

- Using Sound Recorder on Windows. Pop in the CD, fire up Sound Recorder and cue the CD up to the point at which you want the audio to be 'flipped'. Play the CD and press the 'record' button on SR. Press stop after it is done. Then go to 'Effects' and pick 'Reverse'. If it captured the audio you will now have it backwards. You can then save it as a .wav file.

- WaveStudio is the software I use for this type of stuff... if you have a SoundBlaster soundcard on your computer WaveStudio should be on the installation disk... very simple to use but you can record stuff off of a CD and reverse it then save it as a .wav file with ease...

- try www.cooledit.com ; CoolEdit is a bit more advanced but it can do this thing also.

As for drowining out other instruments, I don't know any software that can do that, though I know some DO exist out there, but they remove the vocals from the audio...
As GodIsAnAtheist said, you'd need to have the master to do that, because these softwares see everything as one audio chunk.

Hope this helps!
