Owning a firearm is not a right; however once a person possesses one, that person has an ethical responsibility to not misuse it. This is the most important aspect of all.
Consider that you own a firearm. You, or those near you that can access the firearm, have the power to use deadly force against other human beings. You will probably never think of doing it, but the potential is there from the moment that the firearm enters your possession.
I feel like invoking Platonis Respublica 331a-332b where there is the discussion of withholding a weapon of a friend who is not of sound mind, but I don't think I could make a fitting enough analogy. Indefinite person withholding weapons to the government and the person of unsound mind to the uneducated populace, perhaps. I won't bother to flesh the rest out though.
