Actually, the mighty Enslaved have brought back under the BM fold (which I got bored with about 5 years ago).

Can anyone tell me about the last 3 Satyricon albums? Are they as good as the reviews claim?

I have Immortal's "Sons Of Northern...". While I do like it, I really don't feel it's as monumental as everything thinks. Are "Damned in Black" and "Heart of Winter" any better? Or simply more of the same?

Is Arcuturus' most recent release any good?

Finally, how are the 2-3 Enslaved albums released prior to "Beneath The Lights"? Are they also awesome prog-like masterpieces?

to me quite the same happened, but instead of looking into enslaved, satyricon and Immortal, i got rather soothed into german Avandtgarde Black Metal, as "Grabnebelfürsten", "Nocte Obducta" and "Bethlehem" ( which are not even remotly bm in their latter days, but what the heck...). I am really fond of the lyrics of these bands, you have to be a nativ speaker german to fully appreciate them though, i think, or have a really thorough education in the german language.

highly recommended!

last 2 Satyricon albums are abysmal. Haven't listened to Rebel Extravaganza in a long time..and I only listened once. So..meh, probly forgettable as well.

blut aus nord is teh shit.

first of all...you read "good" reviews on the last 3 satyricon albums?? where was this?

edit: check out weakling...it wont get better than that.

Weakling is incredible.

black metal elitists will tell you weakling is garbage and call its attempt to be the best black metal album ever- at least thats how its publicized- a complete failure

but imo, its very good

wow you got a link to such garbage reviews? I wanna read that for myself.

To the OP: Perhaps your loss of interest has to do with the narrow range of bands you're listening. Rather than retreading the tired releases of Immortal and Satyricon, dig into some new stuff. Also, there are BM bands from outside of Scandinavia, contrary to what many seem to think.

Weakling is not a favorite of mine at all. As I've said elsewhere I find the songs tediously long and dull, and I can usually tolerate long songs, but in this case they don't work for me. I think the guitar leads are sometimes good. Here's a review excerpt that I agree with quite a bit (from M-A):

"I like some of the individual riffs and melodies, but the songs as a whole tend to meander or feel like slideshows of riffs, or just get into useless repetition… it never really comes together and feels like a unified whole, or gets the larger-than-life, more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts ambient feel of the best black metal. Actually, a lot of it seems rather aloof to me, like a replication of emotion rather than the real deal. If you want the straight truth, I just find the album boring."

Some BM bands can get away with having mediocre riffs and songs if the aesthetics are interesting enough. Xasthur for example, has always had a formulaic writing style and has become quite predictible on the last few releases, but the aesthetics change enough to make each release somewhat refreshing, even when the songs are retreads of the old material. Malefic himself seems to realize that he's mainly dealing in aesthetics rather than songs, with all these rerecordings. Yet, I enjoy them all. Neither the aesthetics or the riffs in Weakling really grabbed me. And the album is just too long. I don't see why they couldn't have trimmed 20 minutes from the album.

Some highly recommended bands:
Leviathan (US) (all)
Drudkh (especially Forgotten Legends and Blood in Our Wells)
Deathspell Omega (especially Kenose and Inquisitors of Satan)

yea. its quite common they slag it off as a pretentious bit of wannabe emperor/burzum worship, blah blah blah. truth be known i prefer it to any record by either act.

definately better than burzum.

weakling is great, but i haven't yet had the hair on my arms rise from listening to dead as dreams. burzum for some reason gets that job done well. leviathan also manages to have the same effect, especially on tentacles of whorror.
