Loudness of subwoofer during mix?

I find a good level to have it is at 'off'. I've had no major low-end translation problems, and I do all my mixes on a speaker pair than have 5.5" low-mid drivers. Most rooms have enough problems as it is without introducing a second crossover and pushing a bunch of sub frequencies around.

Actually I turn the sub off periodically and mix in just the satellites, and use the subwoofer when I'm ready to mix in the -100 hz range. I also prefer to mix on 5.4 inch drivers as opposed to the big 8 inch drivers, because the 8's can take more bass, so you might tend to mix bass heavy. Tuning your room with bass traps helps a lot.
