A straightforward yet varied thrash-laden platter with some elements from other genres can be found with The Passing. There’s definitely some melody to be found, but this isn’t a complete power metal release by any means either. One can also sense a tinge of progressiveness that likens them to bands that implement this flavour only slightly into their sound, like Nevermore. The combination of different elements leads to a distinctive sound, which is an important factor. The band also intersperse their songs with tasteful solos, as seen from tracks like “Dead Man”.

Vocally, there’s a constant switching between growls and clean singing and it suits the material extremely well. Really, Machinery has all the ingredients to be a powerhouse. They sound rather current rather than classic, which works well for the outfit. The Passing has the ability to switch between a conglomeration of different sounds to a more rigidly defined musical element quite well. Another song that manages to make an impression is the last one "Waiting for the Wave”, which closes off the proceedings on a high note. Everything to be found is tight and well performed lending to a high quality feeling throughout.

This should actually appeal to a wide variety of different metal fans because of the variety of styles Machinery bring into play. There’s always something compelling to catch your attention on The Passing, which keeps you riveted at all times. They might be grooving with an At the Gates type vibe one moment and shifting to more thrash-like riffs the next moment. The work shimmers with quality from the performances to the song-writing to the production values. A nice mixture can be found between melody and aggression that is done extremely well. The Passing comes recommended to anyone looking for intelligently played metal that lacks the restrictions of one particular genre.
