i just converted to a Mac after being a PC user my whole life and i'm not fully familiar with the plugin selection on OSX. assuming there are great plugins that a Windows user wouldn't know to look for, could you please recommend me some of 'em? also i haven't tried both yet but which do people here prefer on a Mac and why - Pro Tools or Logic?

thankz :)

Logic is mighty, definatly my #1 DAW choice.

if you go with logic you'll be using the AU (Audio Units) plugin format. most commercial plugins are available in this format but there are exceptions.
there is also a VST->AU wrapper available from fxpansion, but bear in mind that the vst needs to be mac compatible in the first place.

logic 8 comes with amazing plugins!!!!!
Great compressor
Nice multiband
PERFECT IR REVERB (my number 1 reverb!!!)
wonderfull delay (designer)
AUDIO->MIDI (great for using DFH with real drums)
good eq
nice adaptive limiter

and a lot more!!!!

no limitation on tracks (protools LE has)
very FAST
works great with waves V6 plugins

All of this is very, very true.

frankly theres nothing stopping you from doing a full production entirely within logic. plus the Synths and sampler are excellent.

and if you shop around it's real cheap.
i got my brand new factory sealed copy of Logic Studio for just under €200 a few months ago.
best value for money ever. my stomach churns at the thought of forking out for digidesign crippleware in the future.

Logic is great, but also give Cubase 5 on the Mac a look. I personally prefer (and use) Cubase 5, and I've found it to be more CPU efficient than Logic as well as more powerful, with a simultaneously cleaner and more robust UI workflow.

However, I wish I could have Logic's included plugins and virtual instruments in Cubase - not because the ones in Cubase are bad, but because the ones in Logic are insanely awesome. Sadly, they are in a proprietary format and cannot be used outside of Logic.

Pro Tools just isn't worth it, it's an extremely inferior product to the others, unless you run HD, in which case the differences become more a matter of personal preference.

Personally I prefer PT, but it's a matter of taste...I find it more quickly when I have to record or edit something. And Logic doesn't have a BD function...and when I had to edit a drums take...I became crazy

kazrog:
I switched from cubase 4 to logic 8 because I had soooo many problems with cubase 4!!!!
1.Strange CPU overloads
2.breakdowns for no reason
3.problems with 3. party plugins
4.projects went lost after saving!!!!

With logic all this problems were gone!!!
I´m not bashing cubase for anything, but it didnt work on my macbook pro so after one year I switched and it was the best choice for me.

After the last cubase 4 update I cant import mp3 and cant bounce my projects!!!!

Logic is the way to go. Awesome stock plugins and really nice to work with. Pro Tools is great for editing but a 003 will cost you muchos money.

Also, you're pirating days are over when you go mac :D

For the money, Logic is awesome. The stock plugins are great. I still think it is much less user friendly than Pro Tools. But in the end its all user preference.

And as far as plugins...if you go Pro Tools get the Massey stuff. Tapehead, CT4 and the L2007 are freaking awesome.

for some reason i *really* don't like Reaper on OS X.
Blurry visuals (not the reaper developers fault) and lack of the media explorer mainly.
it just wrecks my eyes.

also, i'm still missing out on all the freeware windows vsts that i would have relied on to get the job done with reaper/windows.

I downloaded the new Reaper beta for OS X the other night and tried to use it...holy shit. I felt like a total noob. I thought the UI was incredibly confusing. Just not for me I guess.

use the search function. there have been countless threads recently that talk about logic and the plug ins. I use logic, and prefer it over the mentioned daws. look for all of my posts, you will find tons of shit!
