'Man in Black' BIG Rock/Metal Song (SoloC, BFD)

Verses are Alice In Chains featuring Chris Cornell all the way. And then you went and invited Zakk Wylde to do the choruses!!! :headbang: I'm downloading this and its going straight onto my Zune.

ha, no idea what a Zune is like :p

I've tried my best to ignore the Alice in Chains comments. I don't get it :S I know in previous songs you can hear comparisons but I don't hear anything similar to AIC in this one.

I get this soooooo much, I'm scared people will think i'm trying to copy AIC or somet when I'm really trying to create my own style. :S

Man, this is a fuking nice song:) You've got a fucking good unique voice. I really enjoyed this song( i listened it already ~10 times)
Everything is perfect:) The rock-grunge-sludgeish riffs, the vocals, the solo, the atmoshpere.

And forget about that you're copying AIC. I like them too, they had some fucking great albums but they are no more... But you're rockin now!

Ten years later peoples gonna say, "man i feel that Maverick vibe" :))

I want more songs like this:)) And BTW thoose orchestral songs in your myspace are great too!

Man this is fucking awesome stuff! Really like this kind of music along with my metal stuff, makes a damn nice change!

And from the North East too, you so gotta get this project on the road dude! \m/

I don't think anyone here is accusing you of being a copycat, but the similarities in the vocals are definitely present and something you'll need to either learn to avoid or learn to accept.

For starters, it seems your singing voice just inherently has a Staley-meets-Wylde-with-a-touch-of-Cornell sort of timbre to it, even before technique or note choice enter into the equation, but when they do, it's eerie. The way you deliver the verse melody here is very much in the fairly exclusive Staley school, and even your choice of harmony lines are a bit similar to those of Jerry Cantrell.

I don't doubt that you arrived at your style independently and spontaneously, but the more you say you don't hear the similarities the more it gets to be like someone going around saying "Ich bin ein Berliner" in a sharp Massachusetts accent while protesting that he's never heard of JFK. The similarities are there, and intentionally or not, you're playing into them. But you enjoy singing the way you do, right, and people enjoy hearing you sing the way you do, so how can that be a bad thing? Own it. :)

Thanks man :)

I've finally got a band together. So will get this stuff out to people in about 3 months hopefully.

Yeah man, I didn't mean to imply anybody was calling me a copycat etc. I'm just a bit fearful of being one of those "this guy sounds so much like ....." singers. I just hope my voice is recognizable as my own. Something I want to work on, making my voice sound unique as such.

But it's all good - I've only been singing 3 years so I'm still discovering my voice. It's funny because I actually learnt to sing from listening/singing to Tony Bennett classics. When I tell people this they're like "huuuh? what??" I love Tony Bennett's voice and his vibrato is the best in the business in my opinion.

The Layne Staley thing is interesting though. I've been getting it for quite some time now, way before I even had heard an Alice in Chains song. I eventually got round to checking them out late last year and couldn't hear what people were talking about until one day my brother played a track while I was in a different room.. At first I thought he'd put a track with my vocals on. The funny thing is, he couldn't hear it too until the exact same thing happened. I was playing some Alice in Chains and he came in and said "I thought that was you singing". Weird.

But don't get me wrong, to be compared to such outstanding singers is great. I just hope as my vocals progress & I carry on improving my range, technique etc.. My voice will come into it's own & have it's own distinct sound.
