Manilla Fucking Road

How many times do I have to tell you that what you think doesn't matter, sevag? You have to actually know things before people start giving a shit about what you have to say.

This band is actually really awesome. Anyone who thinks they're overrated is probably deaf.

I have two of their albums (Crystal Logic and Voyager). I find Voyager to be absolutely boring. Crystal Logic is a decent album though.

When it comes to traditional heavy metal, I'd rather listen to Armored Saint

I really have to disagree with you on this, as brilliant as those bands are, none of their discographies come close to the overall consistency that Manilla Road have displayed throughout their career. More than a dozen studio albums and not one that you could describe as a dud, which is a hell of lot more than you could say for pretty much any other band in Heavy Metal that has been around for as long as the Road has.

I would describe Mark of the Beast as a dud. As far as Crystal Logic, which is supposedly one of their best, I was only really impressed by "Necropolis" and the title track. Nothing else really reached the level of awesomeness of those two.

I'm not saying they're bad. They've definitely done some great songs, and I intend to check out more of their albums. But I find it rather laughable that people here are putting them on such a pedestal. They seem to be getting idolised because of their underground status. Which happens with a lot of fucking bands here, I might add.

Voyager is their best album since Mystification. In the first track you can fuckin' hear Immolation-esque riffs and the drum work is better than it was on any other MR album.

I really need to pick up an album from these guys. I listened to them one time a while ago, then listened to them when I was in the car with Zeph when we were going out to eat.

Or maybe you don't know what you're talking about with respect to this style of music, which seems abundantly likely. There are a lot more obscure bands than Manilla Road playing in a similar vein, but none of them close.

What does this even mean? Am I required to have extensive experience with "this style of music" before I'm capable of comparing them to other bands which I'd consider better in the overall scope of metal? Last I checked, Manilla Road isn't exactly the most super-inaccessible or 'hard to get' type of music.

Just in case we may be using different standards of evaluation, however, let me clarify that my main gripe with them is in the songwriting department. I think it's safe to say that song-for-song, their riffage and composition do not stand up to bands of the caliber of Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Metallica, et al.
