Let me also recommend Dan Simmons' Summer of Night -- it isn't SF, but it's great! It was recommended to me years ago (1992?) by a certain Kirk Hammett and he was sooo right.

I figured out why the Consul is so reluctant to tell his tale
I dare not tell you if you really are going to read the book. His story didn't really make a hell of a lot of sense as it jumped all over in its chronology, and it really doesn't give me insight into his strong motives. It's one of those things where you would have never guessed, and then after you find out you say "well geezus, i should have figured that out"
Had I not known there was a sequel I would have been mighty pissed about the ending, so far the sequel seems to start at about the start of the pilgrimage from the first book, but from a different perspective. Looks to be equally interesting!
I can't wait for the EIGHT DEADLY SINS!!! hopefully they'll have the 9th deadly sin (amputee midget porn) on a japanese bonus track or something

I got turned on to Manticora from the PPIII sampler. I was hoping fopr them for PP4 and 5..so far a no show. I hope it's not a behind the scenes ordeal for Glenn because they would be great to see.
