I posted this on FB but I need to decide soon. Matte or Gloss black stain on this chunk of wood? My original thought was matte but my luthier is strongly recommending gloss to get the most out of this absurd hunk of wood. I almost think it will be too extreme gloss. Vote!

gloss, it will resist sweat and nastiness better. I like the idea of just glossing the front. I enjoy the feel of matte finishes but Im one of those people with toxic string eating, neck discoloring hand sweat and if I were splurging on a sweet custom guitar I would want it to stand the test of time.

Thanks for the answers so far. FWIW this is a choice between satin poly (not oil) or gloss poly so they should offer similar protection though the matte will gloss up where I play over time. The neck will be matte regardless of what I pick for the body/headstock.

Gloss
I bought a guitar with a similar top recently and now spend most of my time worrying about dinging it :Spin:
I noticed you mention black colour , here is mine for comparison
