can i get some pictures, and some roll of settings of these babies in action?

like general miking set ups on cabs and toms and snare

i just want to see how everyone is using them

and if they have any cool tricks and what not

I like mine about 2 inches off the toms at about a 45-degree angle as a starting point. They are also nice on kick and bass cabs about 6 inches away from the speaker/head.

On a side note, someone needs to make an MD421 with a right angle, like the Granelli Labs 57. They're the worst possible shape for micing drums and the clip is just a terrible design.

They seem to work better on a lot of things off axis for me... no idea why.
never once used the filter.

Just make sure you don't have to roll-off on. Otherwise it's like everyone said, pretty similar to a 57 in placement but you'll have more lo/hi extension so it will sound bigger and more scooped compared to a 57 track. I like mixing those mics together.

no way that can look pretty or be anymore convenient

It definitely wouldn't look pretty, but if you think it wouldn't be convenient then you've obviously never tried to cram some 421s into a drum setup with a lot of cymbals (or low cymbals) - if the XLR cables aren't right-angled it's even more difficult, especially if (like me) you like to position them at an angle.

Toms FTW!

I've been looking into grabbing a pair of these as well. When I have used them in the past they are great on drums (as someone had mentioned, on the kick near the beater). Do you have the mkIIs? Those have a rolloff and a spike at 3k I believe. Some of the older ones, U and U5 are smoother from what I hear
