I'm not getting any sound when I play CDs, which I find most irritating because I can't be bothered getting up and going all the way across the room to put them on the stereo. At first I thought my speaker cables had come loose, but MP3s and video files still work perfectly. Any ideas?

(It's the bog standard 9 series version that comes with XP.)

1. Have you tried an alternative player? Winamp, for example?

2. Open your volume settings and check that you haven't got your CD input volume too far down or muted.

3. Does a data CD with MP3s work OK? Has your computer been knocked or moved recently? Maybe the audio lead for the CD player has come loose. (If you open the computer up it will be a thin back and red cable from the CD drive to the motherboard.)

MPC > WMP

Why they'd go and fuck something so brilliant up is beyond me.

It sucks that MPC can't play a lot of newer files though :(

Media Player Classic. If you wanna have a look, click start - run and type in 'mplayer2' and hit OK.
