Melodyne

Ok well Ive just bought the plugin version. Well see how I get on with it. Does anyone wanna hear some clips once Ive played with it a bit?

I think you should. I'm sure before and after examples would help people make a decision on which vocal tuning system to buy. I was still using the antares crap after melodyne was released and had no idea about it until a few months ago. I wish I would have heard about it sooner.

I love Melodyne because it's the only tuning plugin where the singer doesn't say "did you tune my fucking vocals?"........because it makes him think he just sang that good. Tell you anything?

The way I see it you have two options as far as "ethics" go when you tune a singer. You either ask the singer if it's alright, OR...you don't tell ANYBODY that you tuned him. You really shouldn't go around saying that you had to tune so and so anyway, but if you decide to fix a few notes on the guy and don't tell him, it's best he doesn't find out from his drummer.......if you catch my drift.

I seen an online tutorial on this plug, and thought it would be useful for pitch correction and such and i noticed it looked like you could drag individual syllables from vocals around to fit them in time? is that the case? Becouse im not worried about correcting pitch so much as im always finding it hard to get a vocalist to layer their vox in time with one another. god that would be fuckin great if you could!

Yep, Melodyne is basically God's paintbrush (or Satan's spraycan, whichever way you want to look at it). You can modify the timing, pitch, modulation, and drift. You can make a note longer or shorter, you can split notes up, etc. It works great on bass tracks too. I use VocALign to line up vocal doubles, BG vox, etc., but I think you should be able to achieve decent results using Melodyne to line things up.

Is VocALign pro tools only?

The plugin version of VocALign is Audiosuite (Pro Tools) only.

There is a standalone version of VocALign that requires you to export from your DAW, edit in VocALign, then import back into your DAW. Users of Melodyne Studio would be familiar with this process.

:Puke:

The plugin versions of VocALign and Melodyne make things so much faster.

Ive just been playing with it a bit tonight (cant post the stuff from the band Ive been working on) but Ive got 2 main vocals comped togeather with about 6 tracks of backing vocals in places. Although the performances werent far out in the first place it made the world of difference to put all 8 tracks dead on the note and to change the durations to tighten up the parts. So far its been worth ever penny and I think its capable of so much more.

My only concern is being tempted to use it on every session.

Yes, Melodyne is great and I own it. Still, it's far from perfect. Sometimes you get some clicks and pops and some parts just can't be fixed with it. If you are using the plugin version, remember to record the Melodyne data to your project folder. If you use the defaut settings, you can't open the project in another location. Reading the manual is very important with this plugin.

I did get some clicks and pops when playing with it but was able to smooth them out by moving the red line that controls vibrato.

This is good advice for anybody working out multiple studios.
