On the Black Album, James ran an ADA MP-1 Pre-Amp into his Mesa Mark IIC+ head. There was three tracks of rhythm, and the sound you hear is mostly Mesa. It was ran into a combo of Marshall and Mesa Cabs, all equipped with Vintage 30's. EMG 81 equipped guitars in the bridge.
I've gotten the Black Album tone many times using my Mark IIC+ I used to have. It's not hard. Of course, I haven't recorded it like that. I used it into a Marshall 4X12 (Vintage 30's) cab with an EMG 81 equipped Les Paul. Here's a brief clip. Generic drums on it, and only one track of rhythm except the palm mutes. I just stuck a SM-57 on the cab and ran it directly into the computer. No mic pre's or anything of the like, so you're getting a completely unprocessed sound. Just amp to mic to computer. It sounds a lot better in person.
Well, the thing to remember is that what you heard on my clip wa one track of rhythm with a single SM-57 into my computer. Nothing else. What you're hearing with your Mark IV is about the same. What we hear on the Black Album is three layers of guitars and a whole lot of studio time getting the sound just right with countless dollars worth of gear... The actual sound we're getting is probably pretty damn close to what James was playing with. How it was recorded and produced is another story.
I know I'm a bit late on this but I saw the movie last night.
Kirk's dad, kicks ass!!
"I would delete that right away"
And after seeing it, I must say that I'm pretty happy about my life with
not beeing a rich and famous rockstar and not needing a therapist that
charges 40000 bucks a month. That dude probably doesn't need to work
anymore.
Is it worth seeing it? Yes.
'nuff said ....
(that shitty snare sounds even more fucked up through a DTS sound system by the way)
I personally think it needs a tube screamer just for a bit of extra chunk, but there is a clip I posted on here awhile ago that was just straight into the mark4 with no effects.
Hey James--
Specifically, what would you say the Tube Screamer does to the tone? How does it make it sound different/better?
I've been thinking of picking one up since Andy raves about them as well, but since I've never used one I wanted to find out a little more about the tonal specifics of how the Mark 4 reacts with one.
