I've been searching for info on this thing for the past half hour and only found one thread.

What is the general consensus on this thing? Good for direct recording with impulses or is it a waste of money?

Isn't it exactly the same as the preamp stage of the Dual Rectifier?

It should sound the same as using a Dual Rectifier's FX send. I don't see why it wouldn't. It has line outs, so you would use those instead than the FX send.
