"Mesa studio pre is rather low gain in comparison to 5150"

18 seconds to 33 seconds (and maybe up to 40 seconds) is the studio pre with nothing but a wah in front of it (not active the whole time) and its gain on 5, now, that amount of gain, with the knob on 5 dosent sound "low gain" to me

I believe that you can get so pretty tight and "in-your-face" guitar sound from the Studio pre, but it's design and gain structure is so much different from the 5150/Soldano and other modern hi-gain amps that you can't call Mesa Studia a classical Hi-Gain preamp. It just comes from it's construction.

pretty hard to dial in too, with those older mesa's, the tone controls are before the distortion happens, so more treble = more distortion.

yep those thangs is useful. i read the whole dual rec manual and its really useful to know how the tone circuit works!!!
