Nick no to be a dick but thats just ignorance.

If it wasn't for Mesa and Randall Smith, High Gain amplifiers like your beloved 5150 would not exist. Randall smith invented high gain amps, before that it was just medium gain amps or, amps that didn't even offer distortion unless you turned them up to 11.

Mesa makes some of the best amps in the history of amplification. The Mark IV has been used by everyone from Santana (who coined the phrase "Boogie" in the Mesa boogie name by the way), to Metallica, to The Who, to Lamb Of God and John Scofield.

The Dual Recto has been used by almost every metal band in history that was ever any good ....lol

I'm pretty sure the 5150 is based off the Soldano SLO, same with mesa. It's Soldano that invented the high gain amps.

For some reason, I can't dig the Dual Rectifiers, they sound too scooped all the time. The only Rec tone that wowed me was Nevermore's tone with the GT75's. Maybe I just don't like the way they sound with V30's.

^^ Yup, Soldano had to threaten Smith to change his shit up or he'd sue him for copying his amp design, Smith's design was basically two components away from being a Soldano amp. But regardless, Nick if you think Mesa is shit, you're just doing something wrong is all. ;)

Jason, I hate to break your balls, but he's right.

This is the progression of amps, for better or for worse.

The Fender Bassman was pretty much the building block on the amp pyramid: Vox, Marshall, and HiWatt amplifiers are all a few components away from the Bassman, aside from more intense gain staging.

The SLO used similar gain staging to a Marshall.

The original Dual Rectifiers were something like two components apart from an SLO. The 5150 is also very similar to the SLO. The Framus Cobra is a lot like the 5150.

Diezels are glorified Marshalls that are more low mid voiced...

The story goes on... most tube amps are very similar.

Mesa was making amps long before the Rectifier series came out. Or the SLO, for that matter. The Mark series have a pre-gain stage EQ circuit, like a Fender but much higher gain. These came out in the 70's and could be considered the first high gain amps.

When the Recto series came out (about 1992 as I recall), it was their first design to use post gain stage EQ, like a marshall. And yes, it is very much like an SLO circuit. But I would argue that the first high gain amps started with the Mark series amps. Granted, the other amps mentioned above are not based off the Mark series circuit, but more of a progression from the hot-rodded Marshall/SLO design.

I love mesa cabs, but sorry their heads are completely over priced in my opinion. Well at least dual recs are. Okay I guess they're not "Shit" but I've never had a good experience with them live.

Remember how someone in Mario Party (for N64) pronounced "Miss" (Meeeeeeas)? I pronounce it like the Mario Party "Miss" and an A, but thats because I'm swedish.

you think they are overpriced in the states?
Try to get one new over here lol

I pronounce it in german anyway. so I guess it's "meh-sa" ;)

Yup yup was totally referring to the Mark series and not the Rectos :) This was quite a few years before the SLO :)

Recto is definitely the purveyor of the "modern high gain" tone though.

Overpriced? Most shit with that amount of channels/features are usually in the same price range. 5150 is dirt cheap but it's pretty much a one trick poney.
