Curious which 2022 albums everybody is enjoying the most so far. Early contenders for AOTY/recommendations etc.

Only really heard three things so far that caught my interest.

Satan - Earth Infernal
duh.

Tension - Decay
Best new discovery of the year so far. Bustling traditional heavy metal that reminds me of shit like early Maiden, Brocas Helm, or a slower, less cacophonous Demon Bitch. It's a little amateurish-sounding and probably won't appeal to people looking for flawless musicianship but I think it's pretty sick.

Doomentor - Doom What Thou Wilt...
Didn't get around to buying it and hearing it non-bandcamp quality yet, but this is promising. I loved the individual songs on Opus Diabolae but I hated how the interludes between the songs killed the flow of the album and this seems like that album but without that issue. (I now realize there was an album between Opus and this one I never got around to checking out.)

i haven’t really dived in yet but the ultra silvam is predictably good, so is satan although i haven’t decided how good yet, gbk is p good. listened to the tension once and it seemed cool. i’m excited to check out negative plane, voivod, dark millennium, satan’s host, wampyrinacht, etc

I was let down by the new Voivod. It's a solid album I guess but it didn't really live up to my expectations of the band.

That Tension track ruled. The vocalist absolutely killed it. They remind me of someone so much but I can't think who...

I also appreciate that they put Devimon on the cover.

None of the Doomentor albums subsequent to their debut have ever hit me as much, but the last album was pretty cool. I liked it more than the previous one with the interludes. I haven't got through the new album yet but the first couple of tracks were pretty fucking awesome. "The Chariot and The Fool" (second track I think) had some really great epic metal vibes to it. I need to properly sit down and just soak that shit in.

I can't mount a full-throated defence of the new Voivod album yet because I've only jammed it twice (I think) but I will agree that very few tracks seem to stand out. Maybe it's because this is the first stable line-up since 2009 and they're settling into a groove, but it all feels very samey. No deep valleys but no real peaks to be found either.



I seem drawn to "Quest for Nothing" though. Cool track, the schizo chords are interesting.

Terok Nor - Rematerialization Fails
Sounds just like the cover art, unhinged and cacophonous. Packs a lot of cool riffs in three minutes. Feels rare to hear something like this in 2022, though I can't say it's something I've gone looking for.

Iron Hawk - Signal to Oblivion
What is this, blackened Motörhead? It's alright, not really my thing but I can respect it. The solo was my favorite part and I'm not really a solos guy.

Spellforger - Promo Medley
Oh come on, how can you call your band "Spellforger" and not play epic heavy metal or at least doom or something. You can't toy with my feelings like this

Raptore - Triumphal March to Hell
The gothic intro was so sick and had me hoping for something more atmospheric but it's just speed metal with a very Kai Hansen-sounding vocalist that I'm not really digging. Love how the breakdown around 2:20 teases something more interesting for literally all of 10 seconds and then it's back to speed metal shredding.

Now this is sick! Deranged riffs and a great sound (love this dumbass kick drum sound lol)

For me its Abhoria, Eight Bells, Incantation, Seid, Sekoria, and Vehemence. Pretty sure the new Misery Index is going to be near the top when it releases.
