As the title would suggest, I want to know about metal box sets. Which bands have them? Have you purchased any? if so, was there any extra stuff? what was it? What is your favourite? if you could choose a band to make a box set which would it be? what would the box set contain? etc.

I have the Maiden metal box set, which is pretty good. I only really bought it to get the old B sides which I have on vinyl and wanted on CD. It's a good buy anyway.
I also have the AC/DC "bonfire" box which is also pretty good, although it could have done with more rare stuff.

I have Black Sabbath's Black Box. It contains the entire Ozzy era discography (the first eight albums, remastered) and an 80 page hardcover book with photos and liner notes.

If you're a fan of Black Sabbath and don't already own the majority of those albums then you basically have no reason not to own it.

do not buy the judas priest metalogy. 40 bucks for a dvd and a book. not worth it, i should have waited.
i'm probably getting the sabbath black box from www.yourmusic.com(very cheap), i wish i could afford/find cheap the maiden eddie archive. i also might pick up the slayer warchest if i can get it for cheap :>

The Slayer and Cannibal Corpse box sets are quite good. The DVD that came with the Corpse one has 2 concerts, one from the Barnes era from Russia in '93 I believe, and the other is with Corpsegrinder from the Metal Blade 20th anniversary show. It also has some footage with the band in the studio which I thought was pretty cool.

Opeth have recently had a box set released, with three albums (Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation) iirc, and the Live 'Lamentations' album.

Highly recommended, of course :)

The Slayer one did interest me, especially since I don't own any non-downloaded Slayer albums.
Cheers for the heads up on the Judas Priest one Audiophileguy, it did catch my eye, but I don't want to be wasting my money.
Not metal, but would anybody happen to know about the Tangerine Dream box set Tangents 1973-1983?

Won the Black Sabbath Black Box when it came out by answering a Sabbath trivia question on a radio station. Has the 8 Ozzy era albums plus a booklet. (Also won the grand prize: met Ozzy and Tony during a Rockline radio show)

Got the Judas Priest Metalogy set for Christmas last year. Has 4 CDs with a few songs from each album + some b-sides. Also has a live concert DVD from the Screaming for Vengeance tour.
