Metal Evolution

well "brilliant" I would not use to describe Ten, certainly not alongside of albums like 'Darkside of the Moon' which are brilliant albums.

We are talking about the album 20 years later, that has to mean something hahaha, it's not like "Cold Lake" is being discussed as something brilliant. Ten is a G R E A T 90's rock album in my book. i know it dominated my life the year it was released.

Yes I'm sure the fact of "alternative" and "grunge" being buzz words for a clueless generation did not help ot become a "brilliant" album. So was it entirely the album or was it the right time and right marketing. Maybe if Geffen pushed Warrior Soul like they pushed GnR then we would have seen a truely brilliant 90s album.
I'm not saying it was a bad album, I have it, remember doing covers in a band of songs from that album. But it was no better than Bullet Lavolta 'Swan Song', yeah I know you know that one but how many others do? Mother Love Bone 'Apple' was one of the best 90s albums and by far one of the best out of Seatle at the time.
Did anyone beside me hear The God Machine?

So funny you should mention Warrior Soul because I saw them in front on 5 people on a football field when i was at Guilford College. haha, and around that same time Pearl Jam couldn't come play our Spring festival because they went to SNL to perform. Ten is far superior than ANYTHING Warrior Soul did. I like Warrior Soul, but Pearl Jam's debut is a G R E A T album. 20 years later i still know all the words and know why i love the band. Marketing has nothing to do with it, because Warrior Soul got a heap ton of cash for their videos and airplay they got - because the game worked back then just as it does now. Money rules all. it didn't connect for some reason, maybe because Kory Clarke is an arrogant prick or at least he was at Guilford. Where they could have played songs that the 5 people on an E M P T Y football field might have known instead he decided to do all new songs and read lyrics from his diary. he was a choad that night and i remember that 20 years later too. that's just my two cents. remember, it's not always about labels supporting the bands, if you are a dickhead then guess what, they don't promote you anymore. hahahaha. you know this being a label head.

You don't think Axl was a dick? And sounds like Kory would have fir in nicely in Seattle.
Who gives a fuck if Pearl Jam was going to SNL? Don't understand how that helps confirms that TEN is brilliant. Says more about the marketing to me. Secondly you are crazy!
Ten in a whole doesn't have the emotional grab the 'The Losers" does. Lyrically and subject matter Pearl Jam had nothing on Kory. Kory could be a dick but that has nothing to do with the album. Oh the guitar of John Ricco has yet to be reproduced, that guy kicked ass.
I heard Pearl Jam and Bullet Lavolta first at the same time back to back on the same night. I had yet to hear of either band. But hearing those two together instantly said there was something new on the horizon. When I first heard Warrior Soul there was no other like them and still isn't. Of course there is not a Warrior Soul anymore either.

Everytime you post stuff like this a puppy dies somewhere.

Kory was a brilliant lyricist. No argument there. However, "Black" alone proved Eddie to be a haunted poet that millions of people connected with. That song is an emotional hurricane. As for subject matter for the album, did we listen to the same album?

Once- A killing spree leads to reflection from death row prior to execution
Evenflow- The homeless.
Alive- Finds out his dad is not really his biological father and ends up having sex with his mother who is nuts with grief.
Jeremy- True story of suicide in front of his classmates
Release- Trying to move on in life (specifically from his father he never knew)

Etc...etc...

Do you really think that "marketing" is the reason that folks like myself, Zod, & Matt (along with *many* metalheads proclaim "Ten" to be brilliant 20 years after the fact? It is an iconic album of the times and continues to sell as such. It was both critically and commercially lauded and deserved every bit of it.

That was FUCKING AWESOME! Totally sharing that on FB.

What is their best post-Ten disc?

Vs.
Vitalogy
Pearl Jam (self-titled)

However, I would honestly suggest you simply grab "Rearviewmirror" (compliation- 2 cds) and "Twenty" (live compilation) instead of diving into a specific album. If you really only want to hear the old stuff, "Lost Dogs" is another to check out as it has a lot of B-Sides and unreleased stuff from the Ten era.

I prefer Vs. to Ten. Vitalogy is also great. I kind of dropped off around No Code, but it wasn't a bad album, and Yield had its moments.

As for brilliant, I think that Pearl Jam was one of the best bands to come out around then. Certainly these artists were some of the most innovative rock musicians of our time.

Can I also get a shoutout for Live? Do other metalheads love Live like I do?

Alive- Finds out his dad is not really his biological father and ends up having sex with his mother who is nuts with grief.

I had to go back to the lyrics to see this. I just now got the sexual interpretation. Glenn you have just damaged this song beyond repair for me. :erk::err:

the SNL reference was simply saying in the same year Warrior Soul played to 5 people on a football field and when I had Pearl Jam booked for our Spring festival they had to cancel because of invite to SNL to perform and then as most all of us know the rest is history.

Ten connected with me lyrical as it seems Warrior Soul did for you. I like both bands, but Ten is far more special in my life and it seems plenty of people here had the same happen to them.

Also major labels usually invest the same amount of money in every band they sign initially. It's only if there is some sort of hope or sign of the band breaking big do they choose to invest more capital to help insure that it has a chance of happening. Plus there are plenty of other reasons why bands get swept under the rug at major labels too, IE A&R person getting fired, etc. it's endless, but the initial investment is there.

Well I hate puppies.
Look I like the album but I don't think it is by far a brilliant album, but may for the time and that generation I guess that could be argued, I know what the material is about and well not the first song about someone killing themselves there. 'Black' great song but with the right guitar solo and a can of Aguanet it would be any second rate Warrants' song.
Do I think the marketing helped with the appeal to you gus; well can't really say I'm sure with Matt and knowing his background I would say no. But if that marketing was not there and that word "alternative" did not become chic then no one would have ever heard that "brilliant" album or even gave a damn if it was brought to their attention.

I can go with that.
What 'Ten' came out I was about 16 I guess and that and Nivana was all the rage of my peers. I guess I look for something with what I thought had more meaning than whatever was speaking to an apathetic generation that had no identity. For god's sake they deified a druggy for killing himself because rock stardom was to much for him. Seriously? I can understand Lennon a hero but this. Still I just saw it all as that meaningless and has a teen I just needed more. Luckily there was hardcore so I could be pissed with a bunch of other guys for no apparent reason.
Warrior Soul could have never worked anyway and I know that. It was the wrong time for them and were every young people were then Warrior Soul just would not have worked.

The Thrash one was good but sorry Glenn. Overkill were not a thrash band that many liked or innovating. I think they are a great band and I was a big fan back in the 80's but at that time most hated them since his vocals were in the high range. They did deserve a mention.....along with tons of other bands in the Bay Area. Nuclear Assault were another band over looked in this episode.

Ummmm hello??? Overkill...Atlantic records...went Gold....not popular? And as far as innovating, they were one of the first thrash bands...just saying

This is the 2nd disc that MotherLoveBone would have released had they (Mr Wood) stayed alive, so of course it is brilliant. And for those who don't believe that statement, just look at how quickly the quality drops off in later releases. Vedder destroyed the remains of Love Bone with his pretentious bullshit (sorry Glenn, just rabble rousing here lol).

Grunge to me were Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Nirvana etc...which at the time were ok in my book, but 20 years later the only disc which has made it to my iPod is Pearl Jam. All the others can take a sweet suck, for all I care!

I agree that this very well would have been this next MLB album and if that would have happened then it would have been brilliant. Andy removed from that band lose something that Pearl Jam has never had. And had magic.

Count me in as thinking Ten is a masterpiece. Count me in also that everything after just wasn't even close to being that good.

Shock Rock episode was VERY good. Surprised GWAR wasn't really mentioned along with Rob Zombie/White Zombie. Totally psyched though for VENOM to have been highlighted!!
