Hey guys, I was just wondering how popular the death metal section is in your local cd stores where you live? I live in Ottawa, Canada, and to be honest it sucks ass. There are really only couple of stores that I can somewhat rely on to have what I'm looking for. There are so many bands\artists that I hate now just because they are so close to Opeth and other bands I like in the alphabet. I'm tired of seeing row upon row of #$@&ing Ozzy Osbourne cd's and other bands like Otep (anyone ever listen to these guys - are they any good?) and nothing by Opeth.

Same thing for Soilwork - anyone ever listened to the band Soil ?

Don't waste your time thinking about Otep. Seriously. Let's forget you ever asked about them.

Dude, go to any HMV or big chain music store and you'll find many Opeth albums! I've seen them in Ottawa before, and definitely in my hometown of Thornhill, Ontario!

Best Buy, at least where I've lived in Texas have a disappointing collection of Opeth cd's. I haven't seen anything earlier than Blackwater Park in there if Opeth is actually in there. I actually found Orchid there, though! Amazing! I had a better time with Hastings though where I found Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse. I had to order Still Life to get it. Still Life is probably the hardest for me to personally find.

Theres a Virgin records super-store kinda place in Ontario Mills, CA that i'd goto, had a ton of different kinds of music, even a bunch of metal. I got all my Opeth stuff there except GR. I've since moved and have yet to find anywhere that has a large selection, although Best Buy does have a fair bit. There isn't many local-type record stores around here.

Although remaining underground of course (as it will and should remain for ever), extreme metal has a big support base in Europe at least ... Where I live the situation is horrible, but the city where I study (Gent, Belgium) has a few good cd- and vinyl-stores, specializing in all sort of stuff, among wich metal and goth. So I can't really complain ...
In the big stores, there is also often a metalsection with sometimes surprisingly underground bands represented, but they are way to expensive.

I live in northern finland, so basically metal is the only thing the records stores have... well, not really, but I must say the situation is pretty good. The nearest big city is about 75km from here, and it has a few record stores with hundreds of metal albums. The record store in my hometown also usually has something by the most popular metal bands. But I must admit that I buy most of my cd's via the internet.

In the town where I live, I can hardly find any metal at all. I think I saw a Dimmu Borgir CD in one of the stores once, but that's basically it. However if I drive southeast for an hour there are a couple of stores that specialize in metal and punk. They have a pretty good selection, so that's where I usually go if I want to find some good music. It's sad to say that metal isn't that popular in Sweden... Which is strange considering we have loads of really good metal bands here.

We have a place down here called 'Metal Mayhem' that stocks pretty much most of the metal you'd ever need.

Your so lucky that you have a whole store devoted to metal, I wish the UK had one of those

My local HMV has a reasonable section, but not a patch on the ones in London, in which the metal section is quite literally the same size as my whole shop. There are some specialist shops here in England, but they're by far the minority.

Not that I would ever buy from Tower Records or Virgin Megastore b/c of the ridiculous price (Morningrise was $18, my ass), but they generally have a good selection. When I lived in LA Amoeba Music was a great place to go. Umm I would try local cd stores too, small ones, and used ones which also sell new cds. Here in Dallas there is one used cd store in particular where I found Bloodbath, the Lamentations DVD, and (not that it interested me too much) almost the entire Cannibal Corpse discography plus box set.

As mentioned before I have found every Opeth album at Best Buy other than Still Life and Morningrise, although now all I see is Ghost Reveries. I would also try the Century Media website as they sometimes have $5 specials. I bought BWP and MYAH for $5 each during that sale.

Also, if you are ever in Massachusetts stop by Newbury Comics, which is where I found Still Life (my first Opeth purchase incidentally).

I live in Vancouver (CA), where more or less the entire demographic listens to rap/hip-hop. There is ONE dedicated metal store (scrape records), but everytime I go in it's full of 40-year-olds. Not that there is anything wrong with that of course, I'd just like to meet someone who'd be closer to my range (late teens early 20s). Otherwise, A&B sound and HMV carry a livable amount of metal for decent prices. Nothing rare of course, but Opeth's catalogue is almost always there.

Dude glad you asked I need to get rid of some steam...

In Wellington, New Zealand, we don't get shit here. If I saw an Opeth album somewhere in stores, that would be the day that pig can fly. Bloody hip hop muthaf$#ks.

There was a shoppe in my tiny town that did quite a fine job in getting me into metal (Found Kill 'Em All, Killing is My Business, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and a lot of other classics for a really good price!), but then they closed the shop :(

Now I either visit a bigger record store that's like 30 minutes drive from me, or just order online.

When I was in America, I went to this Virgin Megastore and they had a lot of good stuff. I found 2 Pan.Thy.Monium albums there o_O

Theres a specialist store in my town that has had the same copy of still life for ages.. and the HMV near me.. 1 copy of Still Life once again. Thats it. I rely on Amazon for all my metal. And it hasn't let me down yet hehe, although currently waiting for Pale Folklore.

Which Taake album is good to get, i've heard a couple of their songs and they sound excellent. Which album is good starting ground considering i'm pretty much open to anything and i love a couple of their songs already?

i'm in the usa...
chain stores usually have pretty slim selections, but some, like newbury comics, are very good for metal and other beyond-the-best-sellers stuff.
indie stores are great but they're a dying breed.
chains and the internet seem to be taking over.
