Why do you guys gotta be asses i mean seriously i'm just wondering what the fuck a riff is which is most likely what i mean when two guitars play a melody togeather either heavy or not.

I agree with Chaotic...I believe the dude is talking about a harmony, especially if he just went to see In Flames...they do that rather well

...and fucking flame me if you want for DARING to compliment In Flames...I care not...

USMC0341 I dare not flame you. From all the posts you have made. I have drawn one conclusion. That your a cool motherfucker \m/

As far as the threadstarter goes.
I think he just wants a tutorial through the basic terminology of guitar/metal.
Go to harmony-central.com my friend. It's a good music site that you might learn a thing or two from.

Anyways, a riff is basically whatever the guitar is playing. The breakdown in Metallica's "Creeping Death" is a riff.

What your talking about the two guitars an the "beautiful heavy" thing is a harmony lead. They're also called parallel 4ths, 5ths. It's basically two guitars playing the same lead at different positions on the fret.

True in most cases since most of todays music is riff based, but it's really just a short verse that's repeated. That's why people remember riffs- because they're repeated before shifting to the next riff. If you were to have an ongoing melody with no repetition however it would not be a riff.

Thanks to the last 5 or soo posters you answered it perfectly and nicely I appreciate it
