MF.com scratch n dent: good idea??

Never bought anything from them that was a scratch 'n dent, but I've never been happy with their service. I once placed a rather large order with them and it "got lost." It took me another 4 weeks to wait things out and for them to get their act together. In the end I still didn't get everything I wanted, but at least I got the important stuff.

I guess it depends. What are you planning on getting?

Might as well go for the discount up front -- it'll save you the time and trouble of trying to return a full price product after it arrives scratched & dented anyway. :Spin:

Scratch and dent items are guaranteed to work as new. There will be some cosmetic blems - but nothing really too bad. MF has a normal 45 day return policy - without question if the product fails or doesn't work as it should - they'll cover the return cost of shipping for a full refund.

I do know they are extending the return policy for Xmas. You can tell them this is a gift (place the order via phone) and this will let you return it past the 45 days (I think they give until Mid January, but you might want to check).

I bought a scratch and dent bass - discounted pretty big but the actual scratch was barely noticeable, and on the back of the instrument. It's just cause it's blemished that they can't sell it as new.

I always figured if I ordered a scratch-n-dent amp it would come with a huge rip down the grill with a bloody steak knife stuck in the speaker.

Ah, but where was the DENT, HMM!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

I have somewhat of a unique perspective on this. The MF shipping facility is in kansas city and all the scratch and dent stuff is in a wharehouse here in kansas city. 99% of this stuff is COMPLETELY FUCKING DESTROYED. Not "scratches and dents" more like holy fuck the cab has been reduced to toothpicks.

I have bought hundreds of scratch and dent items from them but only after seeing and handling it myself, because again, most of it is overpriced garbage that is only useful to you if you are a tech and need parts.

I guess I'm saying buyer beware

Wasn't there somebody that bought a 6505 new from them and had to get it replaced a couple of times because when it arrived it was all fucked up?

I must have really good luck with MF, then...I've only ever had 2 problems with something that was sent...neither had anything to do with them...

The Line 6 Variax Bass (wanted to try it) was beautiful, but one of the piezo pickups was weak compared to the other strings...they took it right back...

The FP10 I sent back since they discontinued it right after I bought it, and they took it right back with no problems...

Other than a long wait for the ESP guitar, that apparently happened with all the dealers when I was buying, I've had incredible service from them. One of my favorite companies to deal with, actually.

oh, don't get me wrong, I love them and they have saved me thousands of dollars. I'm just saying because I have seen what they define as "scratch and dent" I would be very uncomfortable buying something sight-unseen that they have designated as such.

The physical clearance center in KC does not house the normal "scratch and dent" or "blemished" items featured on the web. What you have in that store is exactly as you said. The stuff that is actually just beat to shit. The cool thing with these guys is you can haggle prices to pretty cheap since they are just trying to get rid of it.

Most people I know who shop there are usually just buying things for parts to rip out of (speakers out of cracked cabinets, replacement necks from guitars with busted bodies etc).

Never had a problem with them. I have even ordered guitars from them in the past.

I used to work in the returns dept. at Musician's Friend. The stuff that we put out in the store is the absolute worst damaged stuff. Meaning it can't be sold on the web with any gaurantee. If the scratch and dent shit comes with a warranty, it's cool. The stuff that we would sell on the web was very minor blemishes or maybe a dent, but nothing major. If something such as an amp absolutely would not turn on then it would go to the store. If the amp had a slight rip in the grill cloth or some kind of scuff it would go on the web. Most of the items returned in good condition get cleaned up and sold as new again. You will unlikely find a Gibson, Martin or any other high end guitar with the web discount, because we sent any malfunctioning guitars back to Gibson. They are one of a couple manufactures that actually ship their guitars in CASES! So many guitars get wasted by UPS because they are shipped in cardboard boxes. This is where the scratch and dent sale comes in. The amp, I would imagine it would have a slight cosmetic flaw and nothing major wrong with the controls or electronics, but only buy it with a 45 day warranty. I get a discount there, so I only buy brand new stuff for cost+10%!!!!!!!!!

I've only ordered things from them that were scratch and dent that weren't electrical at all. Like rack stands, etc. Always had good luck.

I bought a rolling mixer/rack stand recently for example, for much less than it was originally and I can't for the life of me figure out what was wrong with it.

I'd personally stay away from anything that needs it's 'structural' or electrical integrity to operate though.
