As a teenager in the 70's who looked up to Michael Schenker as a Guitar God above all others for his uniquely melodic lead style, phrasing and tone and followed him religiously through UFO, MSG, Scorpions, Contraband, etc., I--like many--have for the last 30 years been dreaming of a day when he would clean himself up, take himself and his playing seriously and return to the player we know he can be. Last night in San Francisco--the first night of his reunion tour with Robin McAuley--was that night. He was clean; he was healthy; he was smiling, singing and slapping hands of the people near the stage; and--most importantly--he was absolutely on fire on the guitar. Having seen him a number of times through the years (including when he almost knocked over a Marshall stack as he stumbled drunkenly into it while doing a sloppy lead), this was a different man. He was amazing. He was better than he has ever been. He showed a speed, dexterity and style that was the best of classic Schenker coupled with a compulsion to prove that he has everything he ever had and then some. It was the second coming of Christ for the entire crowd.

Let me also say that the entire band was firing on all cyliders. Robin McAuley's voice was strong and the perfect match for the UFO, Scorpions and MSG songs that made up the set. He was amazing and fantastic frontman. Pete Holmes (Drums), Elliot Rubinson (bass) and Wayne Findlay (Keys and guitar) made a solid backbone to the band.

If you are a Schenker fan or someone who simply wants to drop jaw and see what playing the guitar should look and sound like, run--don't walk--to the new and improved MSG tour.

Yeah I was going to go to that show but they are playing up the street from me next week at the Avalon, so I am going to hit that one up. Its obvious the Michael is clean again from watching the MSG 30th Anniversary DVD in Blue Ray no less :) He is getting back with all his old peops! He played with Simon Phillips,Gary Barden & Neal Murray on that one, so it would be cool to see him back with Robin again after all these years!Last time I saw them play together was at the Warefield with Great White Feb 24th 1990, still got my ticket stub :) Thanks for the review

It was still heavy of the songs he has been playing for years--great songs that they are--with few surprises. It was only an 80 minute set (which was the one disappointment of the night). As best I can recall, the set list was as follows:

1.Into the Arena
2.Armed and Ready
3.Love Drive
4.Another Piece Of Meat
5.Shoot Shoot
6.Save Yourself
7.Rock My Nights Away
8.Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
9.Let It Roll
10.Lights Out
11.Too Hot Too Handle
12.Natural Thing
Encore:
13.On and On
14.Rock Bottom
15.Doctor Doctor

He was way better than on any of the DVDs. I cannot adequately articulate just how phenominal he was last night. After many hundreds of shows and meeting hundreds of band members over the years, I was reduced to a 13 year old fanboy last night. I met him out by the bus after the show and I may never wash the hand he shook again.

Man, what was the video for the one single he did with Robin.....?????

I used to love that song, but can't recall the title right now. I don't see it in the setlist above.

Probably this one:

I was going to skip the show at Jaxx next month, but after reading this I don't want to miss it.

My favorite from his solo career is from Built to Destroy:

I am just sad that Captain Nemo is not on the setlist.:cry:

Well, I was planning on going when he came through here next month, but I think you've cemented it for me. Schenker is without a doubt my favorite guitarist of all time, but he's had a lot more downs over the last couple decades than ups. I've only had a chance to see him play live twice: once with McAuley back in the day, and with UFO on the Walk on Water tour...I don't think I really got classic Schenker either time (back on the McAuley-Schenker tour I saw, he had Mitch Perry in the band and for some reason let him do way too many solos).

I've always wanted to see Schenker with Robin McAuley so I'm definately going but that's a disappointing setlist to me. Was hoping for at least "Anytime" or "Never Ending Nightmare" in the set. Strange to tour with McAuley and not do more songs from his era with MSG.

What an amazing show in Libertyville last night.
The setlist was longer than the one above.
They also played LOVE TO LOVE, and I think another one from the new Schenker album.

Schenker got REALLY REALLY skinny! Hope he isn't sick.
