Mike was right..."OPETH is not a phase..."....!!!!!

eh, I still like them. Don't listen to them as much as I used to, which is good because I wouldn't want to get tired of listening to them. I find that I have phases with certain albums though.

Opeth isn't really a phase... but you will listen to them heavily for a while, then it'll cool down, at least for me. I'm currently addicted to Porcupine Tree... then it'll move on to something else though. I think we need a new Opeth album, thats all. (or a dvd... :) )

:ill: Sweet Jesus!!! My dog just farted... :zombie: So rank... so vile.

I got into Opeth about a year ago after reading great reviews about GR in progarchives. I still have many prog classics left to get into like Magma which I´m starting to get into. And I´ve also been listening to quite a bit of Psychotic Waltz lately, but I dont think any other band has made as strong an impression on me as Opeth so I don´t know if it´s a phase. 2 early 2 say 2 early 2 tell.

those of you who consider opeth to be a phase:

arent there still some songs that you pop in the cd for from time to time? for instance im sure im tired of hearing bleak (which was my fave track for a few years)...especially after i played it with a band and had to study the song and practice it a thousand times...however, i still cant get enough of...say "dirge for november." it has a simple, but dark as hell, crushing atmosphere and i love it...simply the best song about suicide. dont you guys have any songs of that kind for yourselves?

Okay this is my view. Opeth isn't a phase in the sense that that I once liked it and now I don't. Simply because you listen to something heavily and then stop doesn't mean you don't like it anymore or that it is a temporary phase that you overcome. It's more that at this stage i've absorbed all Opeth have to offer me and I'm all the better for it. I don't need to listen to it anymore because it has become a part of me. It's like reading a favourite book - you don't need to read it again and again because you've already enjoyed it, engaged with it, and now you're moving on to other books. Even if in 20 years I forget Opeth's songs and their melodies, they will always be there in the back of my mind just like the songs in your childhood your mother used to sing. Okay this is turning emo so i'll stop before I embarass myself:cry:

i overplayed them to the point of ridiculousness. but in a way its good because when i was fanatic about them i wasnt discovering new music simply because i didnt want to stop listening to opeth. but isis and porcupine tree sort of took over.

Voivod was my first real phase in music. I got "War and Pain" and " and was hooked. My favorites were "The Outer Limits", "Nothingface" and "Angel Rat", all very different albums from "War and Pain". Jack Luminous is still a song to be revisted time and time again. But after that, things just got old, and I moved onto TOOL from there. I think it is natural we seek "'strange". I think it is just curiosity.

Right now I am in my Morningrise phase with Opeth while working on my projects that I do on my computer, but still listen to GR in the suv while toolin around.

My two cents.

I think is normal that when you listen a lot to a band for a long time you tend to get tired of it, but it doesn´t mean that you don´t like it anymore. I agree with most of you, when i first listen to Opeth it captuered like ALL my attention for months and months I can even say that I got a little obsessed, and I bought most of their records and listen to them day and night (specially damnation) but time passed and also my obsession :p and I still LOVE this band, but yeah, I cant listen to them as often as in the beginning. It´s more of a "mature" relationship right now.

:p

spot on. you put it so well for me about some other bands. couldnt have said it better

I still enjoy Opeth but mainly Morningrise and Orchid. They'll never go back to the harmonized guitar style though and I pretty much hate Ghost Reveries so I doubt I'll be interested in anything new.

definetly a phase for me, absolutely, without doubt, definetly..hated them since GR, god, they suck now...they sold out...roadrunner???bleh! whats with the speacial edition, since lopez left ive hated them.....

yeah guys, thats why u never go on the forum anymore....oh wait...your still posting....

oh well, to each their own

fuck, i haven't even bought ghost reveries. the samples i heard were not good. maybe their most accomplished album (or most directly ripped off from 70s prog) but not their most interesting by a long shot.

This might be interesting - has anyone been listening to Opeth since Orchid came out ('95)? Then we can TRULY know if Opeth isn't a phase. 3 years is hardly a significant test and people go through phases over much longer time spans.
I would be one of those. I've been listening to Opeth since they released Orchid, and it's still one of my favorite albums.

^^ lol. That's around the time I got bored, when Opeth stopped evolving.

Opeth's style has not changed since Still Life guys.

Me, hell, I go through phases of everything. There was a time when Bob Dylan was the main thing I listened to; I still love him and he's one of my favorite musicians but I just don't listen to him all the time. Same with Led Zeppelin, I used to be obsessed with them but now I just like them. Just because I'm not as crazy about Opeth as I was when I first discovered them doesn't mean that they're a band with limited interest or something. It just means I get real enthusiastic about things at first and then they just integrate into my taste.

Yup....3 years....and goin strong....was introduced to them by a board memeber...Mancuz.....first song was TBYFW....adn ever sicne my fav band....i had my talllica phase.....my CoB phase.....my doom metal phase.....id like hte abnds..for afew months....adn then get bored of them.....hahahha.....hasnt happened yet to Opeth....and I doubt it will......theres so much to discover in each of thier song.....!!!.....a garden on sonic imagery if u will.....hahhaa.....Keep puttin ou tkiller records guys....!!!!....u rock my sox off....hahaha.....!!!!!.....PEAC EOUT

Holy spelling deficit, batman!
