"Mix ready" impulses? (noob question)

Ok so at the risk of sounding absolutely ridiculous, when a cab impulse is "mix ready", does that mean that no additional EQ is required? Like high passing and low passing? I bought the Joey Sturgis ones, and for me... they sound like butts. I'm just wondering if I'm destroying what they are supposed to sound like by adding additional EQ, or if they just sound like butts because I'm too stupid to understand what's good about them.

Question: do they sound awful on their own or inside a mix? I've had terrible sounding solo guitar tones that sound great in a mix.

That's because the impulses he made happen to sound like butts, IMHO. I don't think there's any such thing as a "mix-ready" impulse, because nothing (other than a HPF/LPF) is universal to every mix.

Yes, that's exactly what mix ready means, and yes those impulses do sound like butts.

However, nothing can truly ever by 100% mix ready because every mix is different. You'll always have to work it into the context of your mix.

I made some SWEET impulses not long ago that kill Joey's ones IMO. I'm giving them for free as well. You can hear examples here:

(In this clip, first is mine than you can hear joey's then mine again) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6729934/telos vs jtw ir shootout.mp3

And here's a full mix with my latest one:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6729934/SpahIR RV full mix.mp3

Here are the links to download them:

1st (EVH 5153 poweramp - mesa OS - sm57 + d6) : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6729934/telos off axis_dc.wav
2nd (Orange Rockerverb poweramp - mesa OS - sm57 + MD421) : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6729934/Telos RV SaphIR (57+421) M-OS.wav

And mine are mix ready, there's a LP and a HP applied on them and they sound great straight out of the box. In those clips, the chain was TSE808 + x50 (stock settings) + My impulses with no EQ.

EDIT : Here is a link where you can download 5 impulses of mine (various mics/cabs/poweramps). They're all free, enjoy :) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6729934/Telos mini IR pack.zip

Oh they just sound like butts everywhere. Hahaha. I agree though, some of my best mixes are made up of tones that sound awful by themselves.

That's awesome man! I'm trying to finish up a project right now and I keep finding all of these impulses that tempt me to start all over again. It sucks, and is also awesome. I'm about to check these out tonight! Thanks for the link :)

Also, when you say you're using the x50, is there any difference really between v1 and v2? I haven't bought the new one yet because I'm not sure if its worth the 40 dollars for the upgrade. And do I have to bypass the power amp or anything?

I would just like to say that Redline's impulses just changed EVERYTHING for me. Makes me wonder what I've been doing with my life. If anyone reading this hasn't tried them then I would highly suggest doing so and hating yourself for not doing it sooner. FrankTheSmith, about to give yours a shot too!

I couldn't find any Redline with impulses. Can you give some links?

Yeah I'm not redwirez! Even though I know he made some sick stuff, these are mine. You can head over to my facebook studio page if you'd like ''Telos Recordings''. Or even add me on my personnal account (Joel Cote Bergevin). To anyone interested, I'm in the process of doing more IRs with all my 3 cabs (marshall, mesa and orange) and will have a big pack soon (but not those 120 IRs pack that you dont have the time to scroll through, but all mix ready impulses with different flavors). Those are still sub-par to my ears since I'm never satisfied but a lot of people are using them and I got some really good feedback and I can post more mixes using it if you're interesed into that also :)

Cheers !
